COMICS: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Finally Gets A New Creative Team In The Form Of Nick Spencer And Ryan Ottley

Dan Slott has been in charge of the wall-crawler's adventures for a decade but a new creative team is coming to Amazing Spider-Man in the form of Nick Spencer (Secret Empire) and Ryan Ottley (Invincible).

Marvel is looking to give its Universe a "Fresh Start" this summer (less than a year after the last "fresh start," of course) and that includes a new creative team for Amazing Spider-Man. Dan Slott has told many stories of varying quality over the past decade but writing duties are now being passed to Nick Spencer, the scribe behind the somewhat controversial Captain America and Secret Empire storylines.

"I think that a lot of what I'll be doing is reconnecting Peter with some very classic, quintessential elements of the story that fans and readers are going to recognize," he reveals, promising a back to basics approach for the iconic comic book character this June. "And it's exciting to bring the character back to basics and, at the same time, Dan has obviously had one of the best runs on the character ever, and we're certainly going to honor the things that he's done and build from there."

"The best Spider-Man, his personal [trouble] is mirroring his troubles in costume, and the two stories are feeding each other and being Spider-Man always comes with considerable costs to Peter," Spencer continued. "It's always getting in the way of his life. So, to me, it's kind of a dance between those two things at this stage." So, it sounds like he's taking the right approach to the hero!

Spencer is going to be joined by Ryan Ottley, the artist best known for working on Image Comics' Invincible series from The Walking Dead writer Robert Kirkman. He seems like a perfect fit for Spidey's world and based on the cover art below, we can expect a lot of familiar faces to show up. Interestingly, there's no sign of a love interest for Peter Parker; will it be Mary Jane or someone else?

Slott’s run was garbage & if this is written as well as Spencer wrote Secret Wars, it will be garbage too

Why not get Waid or Hickman?

there's no sign of a love interest for Peter Parker; will it be Mary Jane Watson or someone else?

This also reminds me of why Slott’s current run is terrible. In like 784 I think, we start with Peter & Mockingbird being together which I think could be interesting since Peter hasn’t dated a superhero. They are together 2 issues, Venom bullshit happens, they break up (which is just off because it’s explained why off panel & bullshit), & the next issue ends with Peter & MJ (who hasn’t been seen before this issue) pretty much getting together & banging at the end.

Hopefully Spender knows how to at least write romance

@LEVITIKUZ - Yeah that confused the shit out of me to, I thought I'd missed an issue! I haven't particularly loved Slott's run on AS, so I'm looking forward to a new creative team coming on board, fingers crossed its good !

@Chasekeane - It confused me and angered me because despite me wanting MJ and Peter married; I'd read a Mockingbird/Spider-Man romance partnership. I can dig it.

Besides dating Carol briefly (and Kitty in the Ultimate universe), Peter hasn't been with any superheroes. I would have liked to see how Mockingbird and Peter develop.

Instead it's over because of reasons that are forced.

@LEVITIKUZ - Alternatively, if it's written as well as Spencer wrote Astonishing Ant-Man or Superior Foes of Spider-Man, it could be pretty awesome.

Wasn't there a romance happening between Spidey and Mockingbird? I just want either Mary-Jane, Felicia Hardy or Carol Danvers when she wasn't insane.

To be fair, I know they've had a million reboots, and alienated a lot of fans, but I've liked the look of all of the recently announced relaunch books, actually looking forward to this one.

@knocturnalzen10 -

Invincible was one of the best comic books I've ever read. I miss it already.

Spider Island and Superior Spider-man were pretty good, but lately I haven't liked his work. He hasn't run out of ideas per say, but the ideas he's been having post Superior(which was great) have been for the most part really bad.

@noahthegrand - Superior was a great take on the character and I actually wish it would have gone on longer. It reminded me of the edginess that the Black Costume Spidey brought back in the 80's for its time.

This is going to sound cold.

I'm disappointed Aunt May is still alive because I thought Slott would kill her in his final story.

In fact, I wish Aunt May was dead in the comics.

I wanted him on the X-Men, pity...
Now i'd probably get Hickman, and i'm not sure how to feel about that.
Still, happy abouy Spidey tho, can't be worse than Slott!

Hail Spidey!
