COMICS: Don't Expect To See The Green Goblin Taking On Spider-Man Any Time Soon

This year is Spider-Man's 50th anniversary, but if you were hoping that would mean we'd see him come to blows with perhaps his most iconic of villains, the Green Goblin, Marvel E-i-C has some bad news for you.

Talking to Comic Book Resources in their regular "Axel In Charge" feature, Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso was quizzed about what 2012 has in store for Spider-Man. The past few years have seen Norman Osborn take a back seat as an adversary to Peter Parker (first as leader of the Thunderbolts and later as the villainous Nick Fury of the Marvel Universe) and with the former Green Goblin currently serving as an Avengers level threat, will we ever see him back as the Goblin facing off against Spidey?

"It's likely you'll see Osborn battling Spidey and impacting on his world again sooner or later, but not necessarily as the Green Goblin. He's undergoing a metamorphosis into something new right now in the pages of "Avengers" and "New Avengers."

"[We] want to keep the focus on Peter Parker, the guy at the center of the Marvel Universe. 2012 is looking to be a big one for Spider-Man with a lot of big things happening -- the 50th Anniversary as you, mention, a big movie in July, and issue #700 on Broadway. Seems like a pretty good final year for ol' Pete, doesn't it?"

Disappointing news for Spider-Man fans, but as long as they don't kill him off, the option is still there. With many still feeling let down with just how little interaction the two had during the "Dark Reign" and Siege, it looks as if we have no choice than to get used to seeing sights such as this one.

Won't see him back in the comic book pages until Amazing Spider-Man 2 which will have Green Goblin as the villain.

Yeah I'm feeling Green Goblin possibly in TASM 2, but maybe hold him until the conclusion, TASM 3!
I hope they do more then just 3 movies so they can get some unused villians in the mix.

I agree, goblin had his chance in Raimi's 1st movie, they need to keep moving in a new direction. Kraven and the rhino would make a natural pair. Or Kraven and either kangaroo, or the grizzly. Thinking about it, the puma would be awesome.

To meet the shocker, would work as a throw in maybe in a montage showing what Spiderman had been up to over a period of time, but not as a main villain. Carnage and venom never did anything for me, electro sucks a long with Mysterio. the scorpion and the fly have potential. Along with Morbious( excuse the spelling) the living vampire. I also like man-Wolf. Perhaps those 2 along with Spiderman sprouting his extra arms would make a good movie. I always liked the tablet storyline.

I think they should wait till the 3rd movie to put him in so they can build him up in the 2nd movie.. Ya I know this was about the comic lol.

@Mavel72

How about Chameleon serving as an Assassin for Osbourne. And throw in Kingpin cameos as well.

I don't care about any of the villains you mentioned being in a Spider-Man movie, unless they were drastically altered from their original character.

I think Kraven the Hunter and Scorpion have potential for the sequel, but I would like to see how "The Amazing Spider-Man" ends up first.

As a huge Spidey fan... I don't quite care. Give me good spidey stories and I don't care who the villain is. Then again, GG is no where near my favorite villain.

@dellamorte1872: Variety is the spice of life. We don't need to have two villains for every superhero movie. Let the filmmakers mix it up. We don't want this genre to fall victim to formula.

@dellamorte1872: If two villains are used in every superhero movie, then yes, things would begin to be formulaic.

Osbourne is so much better as Osbourne anyway. The Green Goblin was always a tad cheesy for my tastes. Making Norman a crazed genius influencing major players and events in the MU is the best thing Marvel ever did.

Next Movie Black Cat... Silver Sable And Kingpin.... That Sounds Like A Good Time Unless They Plan On Getting Someone to Play Gobby that'll take it to the next level

I like Green Golbin. Hell, even own his 1st appearance in ASM #14, but as far as Spidey villains go, Doc Ock is awesome!

I actually like Osborn better as the evil genius and Iron Patriot than Green Goblin. As far as the movie, I hope Electro, Rhino, and Kraven Make the cut.

A movie version of Kraven's Last Hunt would be incredible. But for it to be done right, we'd need Spidey already fairly well-established as a hero and at least some familiarity with Kraven.
