If we had to choose one word to describe Marvel's
Spider-Man 2099 #1 - it would probably be
weird. So it's a good thing we're doing a review to try to expand those thoughts a bit more!
Spider-Man 2099 #1 features a rebooted Miguel O'Hara trying to escape his ties to Alchemax following his witnessing of mutated Thorites - religious people which worship the mighty Thor as their Lord in this time period.
The word Oroborous and nightmares of spiders plague Miguel as he dodges his fiance, his boss (sort of), and even his brother. It's the relationship between Miguel and his brother Gabe that is where this comic shines the most - exploring the dynamic between these two and showing where our hero gets hope from when he's at his lowest.
To be honest, the issue was a bit confusing overall and relied heavily on the scenes with the mutations as well as the brotherly dynamic to tell the story - leaving any trace of action to fall by the wayside. It's fun to see the future technology though - for instance - movies automatically play whatever ending the audience craves.
In what proves to be a strange and spectacularly confusing installment, Marvel's Spider-Man 2099 #1 has a bit of trouble telling a compelling story. However, with the brotherly dynamic between Miguel and Gabe, the issue isn't entirely without heart. With minimal action, however, this isn't a comic book that will prove very memorable to most readers. It would feel that 2099 should have a little more to offer. - Three out of five.
