Zack Snyder Reveals Why He Had No Interest In Making "Amusement Park Ride" MCU Movies

Man of Steel and Justice League director Zack Snyder has explained why he isn't interested in making superhero movies for Marvel Studios and revealed whether he's watched James Gunn's Superman.

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder is currently doing the rounds to promote The Last Photograph, a movie that, according to The Hollywood Reporter, features no green-screens or slow-motion sequences (a staple of the filmmaker's previous features).

Talking to the trade, Snyder reflected on a recent visit to Warner Bros. to screen one of his favourite movies, John Boorman's Excalibur. He took part in a Q&A following the screening and was asked one question that, given where he was, hit particularly close to home.

"There were some hard-hitting questions, too, like 'What adversity have you faced in your career?'" he said, admitting it was strange for someone to wonder that, given that it was in Burbank that Warner Bros. took the DCEU from him. "I was like, 'That’s a strange question to ask me in this room, but it’s cool.'"

It seems his DC exit still stings, as Snyder has yet to watch James Gunn's Superman, which was released last July. "I just haven’t gotten around to it yet," he said with a laugh, adding that he supports Gunn and wishes the DCU well.

However, for anyone hoping that he could jump ship to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it sounds like that's not a world the filmmaker has any interest in telling stories in.

"[Marvel is] like an amusement park ride, right? The ups, the drops, the kind of cruising part, and then another drop. At the end, you’re like, 'Wow, that was crazy, that was awesome.' I had no interest in that," Snyder explained. "And you know, maybe that was a mistake. But I don’t think that way. I can’t do that. I’d rather just kind of talk about the mythology of them. And maybe that’s not as fun."

This may initially seem like a diss, but even Snyder acknowledges that perhaps his approach was wrong. After all, the DC movies that have found the greatest success are those that have embraced the MCU's approach, whether it's the $1 billion success of Aquaman or the well-reviewed Shazam! movie.

Snyder is reportedly attached to executive produce a small-screen 300 prequel, marking his first return to the world of comic books since 2021's Justice League Snyder Cut.

Warner Bros. Television has partnered with Netflix on the show, with Snyder now on board to direct the pilot. The untitled 300 prequel has not been ordered to series yet, but a writers' room has been gathered, so it's beginning to take shape.

@SuperiorHeckler - I mean… he absolutely is, as far as interpreting what he did and what Marvel did.

Marvel films took obscure characters and crafted them into world famous mythic icons.
Snyder took world famous mythic icons and made them largely irrelevant.

It’s the ultimate example of “show don’t say”. Talking about their mythology is exactly what Snyder’s movies did… clumsily and shallowly, and he diminished the characters as a result.

@Chewtoy - When MCU movies hit upon the exact formula (AVENGERS, INFINITY WAR, ENDGAME for example...) they produce a product EXACTLY how Zack described it. And I agree with you; Zack is obsessed with dark, grim modern mythology for his characters. Zack doesn't know how to have actual fun with his comic book characters. While the MUC has certainly gone over-board with "fun" on occasion (I'm looking at you Taika Waititi), Zack unfortunately knows exactly one speed and his projects lives-or-dies on that execution. 🤨

@OneMoreTime - I personally don't think Zack is permanently locked-out by the major studios but, I would say that his name is currently near the bottom of any of their wish-lists to head-up a major IP project. 🤨

Snyder took world famous mythic icons and made them largely irrelevant.....? Marvel used all of its BEST CHARACTERS! The Hulk, Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Nick Fury not to mention Iron man. THAT THE A LIST CHARACTERS! WTF are u talking about? Marvel has to pivot to XMen because its used Marvels BEST over the past 2 Decades! Talk about COPE-A-MANIA 😂😂

@ClarkJoeKent - nah man, the most famous character they had back when they started in 2008 was the hulk, the rest were famous for those who read the comics but the general audience had no idea who iron man was back then, on the other hand nowadays even hawkeye is a recognizable character

@roboticJohnson - STOP IT!!!! Marvel BIGGEST heroes are THE AVENGERS!!! Which is ALL of their A LIST HEROES!! I didn't say Hawkeye (hes a C list character)I said Spider-Man ($2 BILLION Dollars & COUNTING) Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Nick Fury. I own ALL OF MARVELS figures & I BUY THE COMICS! Name a character BIGGER. Also the whole general audience excuse can be used by DC because it sound ridiculous.
roboticJohnson
roboticJohnson - 9/13/2026, 1:59 PM
@ClarkJoeKent - that depends on the roster of the avengers, I mean, the swordsman was an avenger, would you say he's an a lister? What about triathlon or starfox? Depending on the time period, the fantastic four or the x-men have been bigger than the avengers

@SuperiorHeckler -

Not only is he definitively, undoubtedly, undeniably, dead-ass wrong, he (and Marty, while we're at it, given their statements' similarities) are only saying so out of what Aesop in ancient times and later the more modern kind folks commonly described as simple and easily comprehensible "sour grapes".

Uncle Marty "not my cinema" Score-cheesey only said so when theaters chose to screen a decade's mainstream climax over his mob fantasy starring geezers #67, and now your daddy Zachariah Snide-er says so after begrudgingly coming to terms with the fact that his pseudo-adult fantasies only adhered to a bunch of easily gullible and impressionable morons as arrogant and self-proclaimed elitists as he.

TLDR: He is wrong, and there's nothing you can say or do about it.

I remember reading somewhere online a long time ago, maybe like a forum or some other comic news site, where there was this pic of The Justice League by Alex Ross with text scrawled over it that said "Marvel superheroes are men trying to be gods. DC superheroes are gods trying to be men".

I feel like Snyder saw that and took it all to heart, and that couldn't have been a worse outlook to have.

@TheWinkler - Excellent comment.

I never got the impression that Marvel heroes were trying to be gods.

That statement may have sounded good, but it doesn't hold much water.

One sentence that’s completely wrong is exactly the depth of Snyder’s DC knowledge. He’s literally Bill from Kill Bill monologing about Superman and Clark Kent.

He has nothing going for him now. His projects have all failed post watchmen. He literally failed upward until he couldn’t anymore. He has nothing but the past and the problem is he doesn’t even recognize it. Like, at least Schumacher apologized for Batman and Robin and admitted it was all his fault, and also admitted it was a toy commercial, whereas Zack here thinks his crap is like some kind of high art philosophy. It’s why his stuff sucks. I think his ego got the better of him.
