COMICS: Shocking Status Quo Change For Iron Man In Fear Itself #4!

The fourth issue of Fear Itself features a major change in the life of Tony Stark, putting him back in a position he's not been in for a very long time thanks to a shocking deal with Odin...

WARNING: Major Spoilers Ahead!

In the latest issue of Invincible Iron Man, we saw Tony Stark face a horrifying fight in Paris against the Grey Gargoyle, one of the Serpent's "Worthy". Afterwards, taking a bottle of alcohol with him tauntingly given as a gift by the widow and daughter of Justin Hammer, the future for Iron Man seemed bleak. Well, in Fear Itself #4, things get a lot worse as he takes a drink from a wine bottle labelled 'Demon Dans Une Bouteille' and breaks his sobriety.

Many thanks to Bleeding Cool for the following scan.

As many of you know, Stark took the decision to become sober in the classic 1979 Demon in a Bottle storyline by David Michelinie and John Romita Jr. What do you think of this decision by Marvel and writer Matt Fraction? be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

That is so perfect it's chilling.

Tony Stark has been on such a downward spiral since Civil War, and just when he starts to pick himself back up he has to lose the one thing he could be proud of because he did it himself and it was a huge personal achievement.

Wonderfully written.

man, i really wish they didn't go back to that. i understand the message and all, but i always liked that he overcame that. the alcoholism thing has been done plenty. they need to just stop it.

So Odin is Mephisto now? Feeding of the "little moments" for his cosmic pleasure?

Drunken Stark is back. Blame it on the booze!

"Demon Dans Une Bouteille" translates to "Demon In A Bottle".

While it made for a powerful scene in that particular sequence, I have no desire to see Tony Stark the homeless alcoholic bum once again.

ITS BEEN DONE ALREADY.

and no he hasn't been on and off the wagon over and over. He was a drunk ONCE for about a year in his own mag and once he kicked it, he never went back. That's pretty much the only endearing quality that character has been allowed to retain after all the tearing down Marvel has done to this once great hero since Civil War. Now they are taking that away too? I thought all the douchebag heroes were supposed to be kept in the Ultimate Universe.

Reboot...reboot them all. Start over, Marvel. Start every title at #1 and retell the orgins of all your characters how your young new writers want. This is the sign that you want to, so go ahead. Reboot. It's doing something for DC, so why not give it a try? Screw any continuity that you've developed and reboot the whole universe so you won't have to rely on knowing backstories. Here is your answer. Take it and sprinkle it with your own PR B.S. and reboot!

This "Marvel Event" has pushed Tony so far that he has gone back to the bottle. Makes sense, but not that surprising. I am surprised Civil War didn't do the same.

The bottle is ACTUALLY labelled "Demon In A Bottle"?! lol Come on,they can't be THAT literal.....

I am relieved they didn't kill him off.

Marvel is as murderous as DC these days.

very well written. good stuff.

just caue hes drinking doesnt mean he will spiral out of control again. Ive started and stopped drinking a lot over my 29 years. You always remember where you have been and never want to return. He might drink socialy again but he wont be a drunk.

@valeriesghost
Agreed

@Hush2010

This is a comic book...not real life. They wouldn't showcase this dramatic event if it wasn't going to go anywhere. Of course this will have repercussions. Probably something pretty bad. Like killing a hero they bring back in time for the movie.

Priest

Bear in mind guys, it doesn't necessarily means that he will start drinking on a regular basis again. What this scene is about is the fact that he is sacrificing that one thing that he was proud of, that made him a better man, that is; quitting the booze. He sacrificed that in order to get Odin to act. It was an act of sacrifice.

I highly doubt that Tony Stark will become a drunk again.

This is very sad for the character but great storytelling for all of us. Tony is going to fight his hardest battle yet again. I hate to see it happen to him but I will start reading more Iron Man now.

One can only hope, Priest. I don't see how drinking is that important to Odin in this instance. Thor throws back a pint all the time.

Which CBM/ CBM character would win a drinking contest? Your thoughts? (Pollmaster, fire up the polls, we have a debate to grill!)

I have mixed feelings about this. Its a great scenne and I honestly liked the "demon in a bottle" reference. But Tony Stark being a "recovering alcoholic" has been just about the only constant in comics and now that's gone
ROMACK
ROMACK - 7/6/2011, 11:16 AM
While he has been on a downward spiral for some time now, he had not hit rock bottom......until now. Fraction spins a good yarn and this will either be the end of Tony as Iron Man (for awhile) or he will come back stronger and more focused than ever.... Like most people do who overcome hitting the lowest of lows.

WHAT THE HEl-???? OH, COME ON!!!! This just proves it--the Big Two are now the Big Wimps of the comics industry. WE DON'T NEED ALCOHOLIC SUPERHEROES ANYMORE, GENIUSES!!!!
plasticman
plasticman - 7/6/2011, 11:40 AM
No alcholic superheroes? Can they at least drink in your world? Wolverine, Iron Man, Thor, and Batman all drink, and have done so on screen. Its part of the world we live in. If comic books are going to take up social issues they need to at least have a resemblance of the societal settings that they want to cause change to.
