Could we be headed for a MCU Civil War after all?

Could we be headed for a MCU Civil War after all?

Just a few quick thoughts on yet another possible direction the MCU could be headed.

If you aren't up to date on you MCU movies, be warned that spoilers will follow. If you've seen everything up to The Winter Soldier and AoS, then read on. There is a rumoured spoiler included as well, and I don't know how to format for roll over exposure yet, so forgive the space block.

The key points for my thoughts on this possible direction for future movies begin with the dissolution of SHIELD, and Agent Coulson now taking the directorship. We also know that Stark was quite proud of his "Privatization of World Peace" in Iron Man 2, making this move all the more logical. With no more Iron Man movies apparently in the pipeline, I think this is a great way to keep the character relevant in the MCU without centering movies around him and having RDJ work for an entire movie. The end of Winter Soldier also saw Maria Hill applying for a position with Stark Tech. With Tony now funding the Avengers, I think it would be quite within his arc to have him take the wheel from Coulson and run SHIELD.

There have been rumors that POTENTIAL SPOILER

Cap will found his own team by the end of Age of Ultron, which could leave Iron Man to use his new Extremis powers to run the World's largest defense system.

This is where my speculation begins. If Cap does find Bucky and try to bring him back to the real world, he could be faced with huge backlash since all of SHIELD's files have been exposed, likely including some bad things Winter Soldier got up to, or some level of destruction from a Hulk rampage. Steve could see that having a secret identity is important for heroes to be able to separate their private lives from the constant danger that their lifestyle brings. Any number of things could happen to force public opinion to have SHIELD register heroes and detain vigilantes. I know that directors have mentioned in the past that there are some notable key characters from Civil War that Marvel doesn't have liscence to, but I still think they could make this work quite well after the introduction of the Defenders, Ant-Man, and possibly even the twins in Age of Ultron. Heroes like these along with Winter Soldier that aren't as palatable as such for the public could end up being chased down by Tony's SHIELD.

I'm not sure how they could fit this into their current slate of movies, but I'm still hoping that if Ant-Man can do anything like what Guardians has done in the box office we could see more movies being added to that slate. Another thing I would like to see is the now "Deep silence" Fury develop some Secret Avengers. I think he is already on his way to doing this as we saw him ask Falcon to join him in Europe as he could use his skill set. I'm making an assumption here that he takes Hawkeye with him, and this is how Barton ends up freeing the twins at the start of Age of Ultron.

A lot of speculation, sprinkled with some hope on this article, but let me know what you think. I haven't thought this out very deeply either, so if you have ideas to add I'd love to hear them in the comments.

Make mine Marvel!

Iron Man has NO Extremis powers in the MCU. Other than that......interesting read. I myself think its unlikely......but I do like what you said about Steve Rogers thinking super hero secret identities is worth fighting for. I give you a thumb.

I think there needs to be some further development of characters, but Civil War will definitely happen. Its just a matter of when.

I just wonder what parts of Civil War people want the most. Cause some of the big shockers just cant happen.

Spider-Man exposing his secret identity
Mr Fantastic crossing the line, helping to clone Thor
Dozens of heroes fighting each other in the same place
The first casualty being a Black guy, way to go creating that Thor clone Mr Fantastic

Literally the only parts that we can actually see happen, is Cap defying SHIELD and running from them, (since we already watched something quite similar in Captain America TWS, I doubt they want to do it again so soon), Iran Man and Cap duke it out, and Stark taking charge of SHIELD.

There are SOOOOOOO very many stories from the Marvel universe that are better and need to be told before we get around to the shamelessly market driven garbage that was Drivel War.

You know, cause Marvel Studios cant use Spider-Man or Mr Fantastic. That was my point in case ya missed it. Plus they dont have dozens of characters established yet.

I agree. Again, another obvious thing that they are setting up that is being tossed aside by fans who like to make their own stories and expectations in their minds. Avengers 3 will not be the Infinity Gauntlet,a GOTG/Avengers team up would not be done in a movie with only one of the team's name in the title, any universe spannning crossover would not be labeled Avengers but Marvel Universe or just the name of the arc etc. are ideas rejected by most even though they are the most logical conclusions to make based on story, time frame, expectations of what Avengers 2 would be and wasn't, and overall common sense. While it will not be on the scale of the comics Civil War (nor does it need to, it will be a condensed loosely adapted version of the story. With Stark creating Ultron that leads the splitting of the two character's different philosophies on being hero. It will use the ESSENCE of that story of Cap and Stark not seeing eye to eye and leading two very different groups. With Stark creating Ultron, Cap not liking the way Tony goes about things and creating his own Avengers that share his vision is the next logical step in the series rather than immediately jump into the Infinity Gauntlet which, again, does not make a whole lick of sense to be the third film. It makes more sense for Tony and Cap to have a conflict in Avengers 3 ...maybe not at each others throats but clearly divided only for it to end with the threat of Thanos being revealed at the end ...and THEN Cap and Stark have to work together and band the Marvel Universe together to combat the biggest threat in the MCU.

1. Daredevil could easily replace Spider-Man as the character that joins Stark, reveals his identity to the world, then has a change of heart.

2. The Fantastic Four were barely present during Civil War. Thing moved to France until it all blew over, Johnny was in a coma in the hospital the whole time, Sue went underwater and lived with Namor...none of them played any part at all. Reed was the only one that had a part to play, but they could easily just leave him out. They already have Banner and Stark to play the brainy scientist characters of the story, or they could leave it out altogether. They don't need to make a Thor Clone OR build Prison 42. Its not needed in the movie.

3. The X-Men had no part to play at all. They were given a free pass and told that if they don't join Cap, then they don't have to register. So they had nothing to do with anything.

4. Wolverine was only there to hunt down Nitro. They could actually make that any character...possibly even Winter Soldier?

5. Punisher is under Marvel's roof again, so he could still play his part.

6. Really, Marvel just needs to introduce enough characters to fill out both teams, and they could easily make a Civil War film.

I like the idea of Avengers 3 just focusing on the Avengers. Then having Infinity Gauntlet be a self titled finale to the three phases. How bout after that a big crossover film every couple of phases?
WYLEEJAY
WYLEEJAY - 9/15/2014, 4:43 PM
@CorndogBurglar. But can you really see Cap going underground again so soon? Like I said we have already watched him hide from the government and on the run in Phase 2.

Maybe later on in one of the later Phases, as one of those big crossover films, when they have more characters established?

Oh no, man. I'm not saying this could happen anytime soon. It would definitely have to be far down the line. They've got too many things going on right now anyway.

There are people that think Cap 3 will be Civil War though. Newsarama in particular. But I really don't like that idea.

Well just for shits and giggles, say it did happen, lets look at some of the characters personalities see we can see what side they would pick.

First off, I cant see why Thor or Hulk would get involved with fighting their friends. Thor would probably go back to Asgard, and Banner would wander off on his own again to stay away from the fighting.

Now Hawkeye and Black Widow have been completely exposed to the public. Everyone knows the things they have done. So i think its easy to assume they would join Stark cause they would feel that would be a step in the right direction for them to look better in the public eye.

I think your onto something there with Daredevil joining Stark. It wouldn't normally fit the character. But, he is a lawyer, so if he did decide to expose himself, he would want to stay on the right side of the law.

The street level heroes like Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones (Jewel), I can see them joining Caps side.

Obviously War Machine and Falcon would stick with their best buds.

Mockingbirds being introduced as an Agent of the new SHIELD so its likely she would join Stark.

So we have so far.....

Iron Man
War Machine
Hawkeye
Black Widow
Mockingbird
Daredevil

Vs

Captain America
Falcon
Luke Cage
Iron Fist
Jewel

So now the question would be, where would the characters we dont really know their personalities or motives choose to go?

Scarlet Witch
Quicksilver
Vision
Ant Man
Dr Strange
Bucky
Deathlok

What do you guys think they would do?

Plus maybe...

Elektra
Black Panther
In humans

I am in no way trying to say that they ARE going in this direction, but I think it could end up being narrow minded to think that everything is building toward Infinity. I think Rhodey would be a very interesting player in a possible Civil War. Most people would probably assume that he would side with Stark, but keep in mind that he stole a suit from Stark to help the military once before already, and that wasn't even Captain America asking. I also think that Rogers passing on the shield to Bucky is inevitable. When I started writing the piece I was only thinking about Stark rebuilding SHIELD, but I can't imagine that Cap would be OK with that and that would eventually lead to Civil War. I'm loving the other ideas presented on here though!

Here's a set of fancasts I did long before Thor2 and Ironman3 were announced.

Thor 2

Captain America 2

Inc Hulk 2 & Avengers 2

I skipped Iron Man 3 as they already had the cast signed on but I had no clue in what direction the film was taking when I started these. As it turns out, I was completely wrong, guessing the direction of Thor 2,but mine still makes sense.

If they do Civil War it will be a way to reboot the series. Kinda like DOFP. Kill off a few characters, make a few new guys... Just my thought. I also think Kang can do this.

@ wylee

Yeah, as far as Daredevil, i was just thinking of someone who's secret identity is just as important to them as Spider-Man's. Daredevil is the only one that comes to mind. It would be devastating to his life, jist like it was for Spidey.

And lets face it, DD and Spidey are very similar characters. Both are street level heroes (for the most part) that rely heavily on secret identities to protect their personal lives, and both characters might have the worst luck of any other character in all of Marvel.

DD would be a perfect replacement for Spidey in a Civil War film.

@ Ginja

I don't see how Civil War would reboot anything. A reboot would require something to mess with reality or the timestream. Nothing in Civil War would accomplish this.

I doagree though, Kang would be a perfect way to reboot, if they ever wanted to go down that road.

Yeah later on in the story Daredevil could switch sides, and as Starks crew starts losing scraps Stark gets desperate and starts using villains just like the comics. Abomination would be a good replacement for Ragnarok the Thor clone. Batroc is in jail, along with The Leader. Absorbing Man is being introduced on AoS. Where is Crossbones at right now? Jail? With Hydra?
WYLEEJAY
WYLEEJAY - 9/15/2014, 10:03 PM
Well I played with the idea. The problem is, having that many characters in one film. Or two films, if you did a two parter. The story would have to focus on just the big players. Everyone else would almost be glorified cameos. We know how much the fans want more than what their given. Nobody would be happy. It would be impossible to focus on all the characters.

call me crazy but it mite be more prudent to intro "secret invasion" first given marvels take cosmic universe, allowing government to force registration act into play. I see it coming down like dat.
