The World According To Wolverine

In The World According to Wolverine, Marvel Comics’ favorite stoic loner finally opens up on a range of topics that are close to his mutant heart.  This week we're getting Wolverine's take on bullies thanks to a few selectec excerpts from the book.

IT’S JUST A FACT OF LIFE that at one point or another, you’re gonna be forced to deal with chumps who get their kicks by pushing you around. I’m a little guy, so I get it more than most. It helps to be able to take a punch or have a body that can heal itself when you can’t. But if you’re not that lucky, here are a few tips for dealing with the big guys:

Never let them know you’re scared. If I’m perfectly honest, I don’t get scared a whole lot. Got too much anger in me for that. But I know the feeling, and I know you’ve already lost the fight if an opponent sees fear in your eyes. Go in ready to enjoy the scrap. The guy you’re facing will be able to see that, too. And he won’t like it near as much.

The World According To Wolverine - Dealing With Bullies

...One thing about bullies is they prey on the weak. So when you’re in a fight you started—and this is important, so pay attention—and you know for a fact you can hand the guy his head without much effort, then you gotta look at why you’re fighting. ‘Cause if you’re not fighting the bully, odds are you turned into one yourself.

Note that this is only a portion of the "Dealing with Bullies" section of the book.  You'll need to pick up a copy of the book for the full content, including Wolverine's thoughts regarding his encounters with The Hulk!

Dealing with bullies is very simple win you can prepare your kids for. With two daughters...well i involved them in martial arts starting at a young age and it continued for near a decade. One ended up being state champ for several mid atlantic states...

We had three bully experiences. One at school resulting in 3 day suspension and a family threatening to sue me, One incident with a neighbor kid who was 3 years older...his mother came down to bitch and then figure it ws my younger daughter that popped him, and the last one was on the bus...also a much older kid. The play by play was AWESOME.

We pulled her off the bus after the town erupted in a religious controversy and it started again. It was like batman begins, we pulled my youngest to protect the bullies... I know some people say this never solves it, but i have never seen it solved otherwise. It still leftover monkey shit in our biology sadly

Lol, I used to actually ask myself how would Wolverine deal with this punk when I was getting picked on. And the answer is simple, go feral. Was a project kid going to a prep school, easy target, especially being short. For about 2 weeks this older kid just kept messing with me. Lol, was actually wearing an xmen shirt, he ripped cause I wouldn't fight him. Once he ripped my shirt I went berserk, with the Wolverine roar and all. I got suspended for 2 weeks while he went to the doctors. Was never picked on at school again. All it takes is a little weapon x in you to stop the bullets. Snikt!

Try dealing with customers who don't understand the f*cking concept of "last call" or "just because I f*cking look young doesn't mean you don't have to show me ID- I'm the one behind the bar, not you".

I'd like to hear Wolverine's solution for that.

Great article, Nate.

But, as a society, we are raising a nation of pussies.

Learning to deal with bullies build character. You learn to stand up for yourself, or you learn to build relationships with people who help you deal with the asshole, or you learn to say things while you are getting your ass beaten that will live with the bully years and decades longer than a black eye will stay with you.

Learning how to deal with adversity is difficult, but in doing so, you prepare for life. That's what being a kid is. However, with the Internet now, you don't have little bastards just after you at school, you have them taking to social media as well, and that does change things pretty much.

We live in a changing world, but the old advice to stand up for yourself when patience has reached the point of uselessness is pretty solid.

@bropous - Thanks! When this little gem showed up in the mailbox, I had to share :o).

I've been in quite a few fights and even been bullied when I was younger (one of the poor kids in school). Being a father of three boys, I have to agree that being a "man" isn't the same as when we were kids.

One of my favorite stories was when one of my boys came home from elementary school and asked what he should do if someone hits him at school (he was told he's not supposed to hit people somewhere along the line).

My answer? "Hit him in the face. Don't start anything, but be sure to be the one that finishes it.".

He got in trouble the next day at school for punching a kid in the face and saying "It's OK, my dad said I could."

:oP
