Marvel And DC Comics Won't Release New Digital Comic Books Again This Wednesday

For the third week in a row, we won't have any new digital comic books to look forward to as both Marvel and DC have confirmed that they have no intentions of publishing their monthly titles this week...

With Diamond Comic Distributors forced to close as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, no physical comic books will be shipped or sold for the foreseeable future. Rather than continue to release titles digitally, both Marvel Comics and DC Comics have paused their monthly comics for the past two weeks, and that's now set to be the case this Wednesday as well.

Neither company has issued a statement about their decision, but it appears as if there are no plans to move to digital-only comic books while the world continues battling the Coronavirus.

That's going to upset a lot of fans, especially as this sort of entertainment is desperately needed at a time like this. Should the Diamond shutdown remain in place for most of 2020, though, both Marvel and DC will likely be forced to make some big decisions about whether to essentially release no new comic books all year or bite the bullet and move to digital-only sales.

The issue with that is it risks making the stores that usually sell physical comics obsolete, and both Marvel and DC run the risk of falling afoul of retailers and Diamond if they temporarily move to digital sales while the pandemic continues to cause chaos around the globe.

As per usual, both publishers are set to release a number of trades and reprints this week, but the likes of Detective Comics and Amazing Spider-Man will have to wait for now.

I don’t understand this decision. Fans would love to have new stuff to read digitally while confined. It’s like the perfect time to test more digital content.

I think when things like this happen they should market their older stuff. Get people more into more of their good stuff.

Do the big two have some kind of clause with their deal with Diamond that prevents them from moving temporarily to digital? I don't think a temporary move to digital would later go on to kill the physical market, but that's just my anecdote given that I tend to at least get one physical book from my pull list depending on which of that weeks covers I like the most, so I can't comment on how everyone else would change. It's not like anyone is going out to their comic book stores at the moment even if Diamond was still distributing so it just doesn't make sense to me otherwise.

@AbidNaga - Why would I buy digital when I can pay the same price for physical and get the digital free?

I can only imagine how it is affecting the staff of those stores economically as well.

My company is keeping the sabbath holy. New content every Wednesday until the quarantine is lifted. Yesterday I released a graphic novel, and there's another coming next week. After that its individual issues.
