It has been two weeks since the tragic passing of Stan Lee and now we know what caused the death of the Marvel Comics legend. TMZ, which first broke the news of Lee's passing in mid-November, has obtained his death certificate.

Lee ultimately died of cardiac arrest, but the certificate specifically mentions respiratory failure and congestive heart failure as additional conditions that led to his passing. Lee also suffered from aspiration pneumonia, which healthline.com defines as "when you inhale food, stomach acid, or saliva into your lungs."

The certificate lists Stan Lee's official time of death as Monday, November 12 at 9:17 a.m. He passed away at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after being rushed there from his Hollywood Hills home. Lee is survived by his daughter, Joan Celia (J.C.).

Since his death, there has been an outpouring of emotional responses from all who have been affected by Lee's work. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige penned an emotional tribute to Stan Lee earlier last week and you can watch one of Lee's final videos, which was a heartfelt message to his fans, here.

@Dotanuki - Why? They’re a pretty reputable news source.

If it wasn’t then it’d be someone else obtaining the death certificate.

Kinda makes you wonder, if he didn't have that pneumonia... Would he have still died? Or was this more of an "old age" type thing.

@KWilly - To be honest, it seemed like he was ready to go ever since his wife died. I'm amazed he lasted a whole two years later.

@KWilly - well, infants and eldery people are particulary vulnerable against bacterial pneumonia. An average, middle aged adult with his quality of life and resources for medical attention probably would’ve fought it off. However, the inmune system weakens with age, especially with the stress than Stan had gone through lately.

@KWilly - The dude was 95, the average lifespan for men in the US is 76, if it wasn't pneumonia it would've been something else sooner or not so later.

I hope that Stan passed away in relative peace. I’m no medical expert, but I’ve heard that cardiac arrest, in contrast to an actual heart attack, is essentially quick and painless. I don’t know how the other conditions would complicate matters.

In any case- once again- rest in peace, Mr. Lee.

Unless the death certificate showed his death was from suspicious circumstances, this ain’t news. His death certificate might as well have said COD: Being 95.

Damn this hits me on a personal level. My mom and my dad both passed away from the exact same thing. Sad news to learn of for sure.
