Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso stowed away on CBR TV’s yacht at Comic-Con International in San Diego to discuss the publisher’s current and upcoming projects, from the significance of the recent immigration of a number of Marvel’s characters to the Los Angeles area and the challenge of accurately and logically depicting the City of Angels.

Alonso also weighs in on DC Comics’ September relaunch, questioning the rival publisher’s plan to release 52 new titles in a single month and naming the one book he’s most looking forward to from the New 52.

Marvel’s newly announced Defenders title, under the creative guidance of Matt Fraction and Terry Dodson, is also discussed, with Alonso explaining why it’s a title he’s been wanting to relaunch for years.

And, of course, “Fear Itself” and “X-Men: Schism” are a topic of discussion, with the significance of both events ending at the same time being emphasized as both titles will leave major marks on the Marvel Universe in ways which are intertwined in the months and years to come.

Finally, Marvel’s relationship with retailers is dissected, from leveraging Marvel Studios’ movies to get fans into comic stores to the current state of the print vs digital debate and more.

Thanks again to Comic Book Resources for another great video interview.

I like Axel's ideas about using links embedded within a digital comic that connect to bibliographical and encyclopedic content. Using those little editorial boxes that say "This happened in Avengers annual #10" to actually open a link to a digital copy of that book (or something along those lines) could truly revolutionize what a comic book is capable of presenting. Continuing to press forward with new ideas, not just in content, but in presentation, is what will keep the industry alive. Oh, and I, too, look forward to Defenders,

What is WITH the DC fanboy haters? Marvel's just better! Accept it! Haha, I kid, but not really. But seriously, DC's not bad. I love 'em. They're just not Marvel. So many of the DC fanboy comments on here are just so transparently jealous and pathetic.

very intrested in the defenders book maybe a film in a couple of years.digtal comics i don't know what to think of this i'm a fan of actually holding the comic/tpb/graphic novel & turning the pages.get the thrill from reading it in the traditional way.i think the 52 new issues will hurt dc,how many of those titles will still be going in year or so after their launch.

ckal: I feel that Danny does fit in well with the Defenders. They added this high level of Mysticism to his character and upped his power. When Spirit being attack them not is Dr. Strange useful but Danny too. Because he can now deck souls. lol I think this is the place for him, at least team wise. Over All I agree he needs his own series.
