This past weekend at New York Comic Con, Marvel Comics announced that writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Daniel Acuña have teamed up to deliver a dark endpoint for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the pages of Avengers: Twilight

This project, from two of the industry’s most celebrated talents, has been in development for years, and Marvel Comics will finally share it next January. Over the course of six issues, it's said that we'll be immersed in a future where the age of heroes has come to a dramatic end. But the future still needs to be Avenged, and Steve Rogers will pick up the shield one last time to save not only the world but, the Avengers' legacy.

The series will introduce new characters with startling connections to the Avengers of today and reveal the tragic fate that befell Marvel's greatest heroes.

Today, we have some gorgeous cover art for the first issue, with Captain America's new suit put front and centre. Among the artists featured here are Alex Ross, Daniel Acuna, Felipe Massafera, and Leinil Francis Yu.

"In a gleaming new world of prosperity, Captain America is no more," reads the official description. "But Steve Rogers still exists, floating through an America where freedom is an illusion, where the Avengers are strangers and his friends are long dead. But is the Dream? How do you assemble Avengers in a world that doesn’t want them?"

Over the years, Marvel Comics has explored a seemingly endless number of possible futures, whether it's the desolate Days of Future Past or the adventures of Peter Parker and Mary Jane's daughter, Spider-Girl.

Those are always fun to delve into and some, like Old Man Logan, have even inspired what we've seen on screen. This sounds like a particularly intriguing premise, that's for sure, and one which should put a new spin on the Marvel Universe...which we may or may not see inspiring stories told by Marvel Studios in the not-too-distant future. As for Captain America's new suit, we'd definitely be happy to see that on the big screen one day!

Take a closer look at Avengers: Twilight #1 below and keep checking back here for updates on the series as we have them.
