Marvel's new Midnight Universe began earlier this month, and according to a Marvel Comics press release, "fans are already hooked on this bold new line that reimagines the Marvel mythos through a terrifying new lens."

It's hard to dispute that, and with more than one million copies ordered collectively, the Midnight Universe had a massive debut. Now, "the nightmare is only beginning," as Marvel reveals the chilling cloaked covers for all three #5 issues, arriving in February.

From horrifying new monsters at Oscorp and the grotesque transformation of the Fantastic Four to further revelations of how some of the world's most iconic mutants confronted the vampiric spread, these issues look set to push the Midnight Universe into even darker territory.

Jonathan Hickman was recently asked about turning fan-favourite mutants into vampires in Midnight X-Men. He revealed, "My favourite thing about starting this story in media res is that we get to have a book that takes place in the past and in the present as it moves into the future. It's really about combining several mythologies into one story."

"While in the first issue we met several characters who are vampires and several who are not, it doesn't mean that we're not going to eventually see their story from the other side," the writer continued. "I suppose the most obvious question is Storm, but there we're winking at previous X-Men lore before taking things in a wild new direction."

Check out what's to come from the Midnight line in February below, and stay tuned for updates on each of these new series as we have them.

My teenage self would absolutely love this new Midnight universe but Im not sure its really my thing noe. Cool art though and I like how the covers do not reveal too much to keep it interesting.

@SupermanFamFan - I’m not particularly excited after the first issues either. This feels like Marvel’s response to the Absolute Universe, but I don’t think the horror elements in Absolute Batman are what make it so compelling.

So far, the pitch seems to boil down to Spider-Man = body horror, X-Men = vampires, and FF = cosmic horror. Beyond those concepts, though, the books feel like they’re revisiting familiar ground. FF reminded me a lot of the original Ultimate Fantastic Four, while Spider-Man seems to be drawing heavily from Absolute Batman, with Oscorp’s activities feeling very similar to what the Joker is doing in that book. And X-Men just reads like a What If story to me. I struggle to see that premise sustaining an ongoing series for years.

It’s a shame, because I was really enjoying what they were doing with the new Ultimate Universe, especially Spider-Man.

@JoshWilding - you posted the wrong cover for the 3rd image. What should be the X-Men cover is the Spider-Man cover posted again.
