Marvel Studios Chief Teases ‘Thor’ Casting Announcements, Updates ‘The Avengers’ Status!

If Kenneth Branagh’s recent comments on “Thor” weren’t enough to electrify you, how about some words from Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige..?

As the president of production, Feige is bound to know a thing or two about where the comic book films are headed — and he’s proving it with some recent updates on “Thor” and “The Avengers.”

“We will probably be having cast announcements in the next month or so on ‘Thor,’” Feige told Empire Online of the hammer-wielding superhero’s upcoming movie. “We’re looking to cast Loki and Odin soon, and the main female role.”

Rumors have circulated for months that Josh Hartnett is the frontrunner for Loki, while Natalie Portman is being courted for the still unidentified female lead — so it’s nice to hear that we’ll know just how true those reports are in a matter of weeks.

Feige also confirmed yesterday’s statement from Kenneth Branagh that filming on “Thor” will begin early next year. The Marvel chief has nothing but kind words for Branagh, who he says is already hard at work on the film.

“Branagh’s here, we’re prepping, and he’s putting together some spectacular animatics already for our first action scene,” Feige said. “We’re digging into the second and third now, and we are just embarking on a rewrite of the draft.”

In addition to his comments on “Thor,” Feige offered some new information about the forthcoming superhero team-up flick “The Avengers,” saying that “Incredible Hulk” screenwriter Zak Penn will write the screenplay.

“Zak Penn is already on board ‘The Avengers’ [as writer] and he’s spending a lot of his time looking into what we’re doing with ‘Iron Man,’ ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America,’ seeing how we’re tying it all together,” said Feige. “And he’s beginning to outline the script now — he’ll be doing that over the summer.”

In addition to “Incredible Hulk,” Penn is responsible for plenty of comic book fare, including “X2: X-Men United,” “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “Fantastic Four” and “Elektra.”

Are you psyched to hear that we’ll be getting “Thor” casting news in the next month? Is Zak Penn the right man for “The Avengers” script?

i would say that zak penn is most definitely NOT the right person for the job especially if he wrote the god-awful Fantastic Four, X-Men 3 and Elektra! The Incredible Hulk was ok but lets face it, it was no Iron Man. I wasnt worried about The Avengers until I heard this!!!

Penn isn't the right man. Fantastic Four and Elecktra were two of the worst comics films I've ever seen. Don't even get me started on X3. While Incredible Hulk and X2 were both great from what I hear he had very little to do with X2 and it was mostly written by his co writers.

I do not have faith in Zak Penn. KB is a good director for Thor. Marvel needs to wise up though. Who the hell chose Gavin Hood to direct Wolverine? God, that was a huge pile of monkey shit.

X2: X-Men United is still one of the best Marvel moves made and The Incredible Hulk was an action packed spectacular! I'm all for Penn, he knows the universe and has been integral in setting up the foundations of bringing this huge story together. I have all faith he can pull it off.

Zak Penn couldn't write his way out of a wet paper bag.

That bastard is about half the problem with these movies right there.

And BTW The opening statement of this article is so stupid I actually loled at it. No one was electrified with the redundant news that he only wants slight boyish looking actors. I'm just wondering if branaugh is searching for an actor or looking for a booty call.

I don't think Zak Penn has what it takes to write a good Avengers movie but IF Jon Favreau directs (it's not official yet) I'm sure he'll polish up whatever mess Penn writes. I really can't see Favreau being ok with putting out crap like Fantastic Four or X3.

IF Penn wrote FF and Electra why on GOD's green earth is he getting a chance to screw up yet another iconic comic book character. Ok I know Electra is b-list, but FF and THOR are some of Marvels bit hitters. Next to Superman Thor is one of my favorite characters I hope they get this right...first dont HIRE Penn.

everyone who says zak penn is the wrong choice to write the avengers isnt thinking straight. hes got lots of experiance writing superhero films and remember its the DIRECTOR who decides what the characters will look like, how it will be shot, how it will be edited, what he wants to reshoot, who he wants in the starring roles.
x-men 3 was a great story...on paper, but completley botched by the director!!

ok, you got me - thats a fair point, lol! honestly though, if i had seen your article i wouldnt have published my own (its not like we get paid for this so there wouldnt be a lot of point exactly ;-), a few times the same has happenned to me as well where i've put on a story and its vanished only to be replaced by someone elses!

At this moment it makes sense if THE HULK is in the movie and Norton is Bruce Bannner. Looking at The Incredible HULK i have to admit that Penn def has a better understanding for the feel of certain character's. I have faith, maybe cuz right now that's all I can do.

Hey, JOSH, RORSCH!!! You both do great articles guys!! Thumbs up to both of you! As for AVENGERS cant wait!!!!! I was hoping MARVEL would do a INCREDIBLE HULK 2 before AVENGERS so we could see how HULK builds up to AVENGERS instead of just the Tony Stark bit at the end of one! I wish MARVEL made a deal with FOX to use WOLVERINE for HULK 2 but yeah, i know that'll never happen lol!!! : D

@ Rorschach: O'rly? Then how come these directors mostly seem to put out lemons? Maybe it's because they suck cocks in hell just like Penn does.

The writer writes, and the director directs. The director can poo poo what the writer writes if he sees fit but usually they DON'T. There's this thing in Hollywood where everyone is so full of themselves and everybody wanks off each other's egos.

Zak Penn should restraining order put on him preventing him from getting anywhere near a computer, wordprocessor, type writer, or any other writing utensil for life.

Just look at Elektra for pete's sake! How can someone [frick] up a movie about a GIRL NINJA? Rorschach, I bet you could write that crap in your sleep! And without any idiotic magic beads or bs clarevoiance.

a few things to point out, elektra is one of the worst movies ever made, rubbish story, rubbish characters, rubbish directing. woman superhero films just dont work! elektra..awfull, supergirl..awfull, the proposed she-hulk starring megan fox, be great to watch her running around with not much on, but you know the film will suck!! so you cant blame zak penn for elektra
because it never had a chance anyway!

@ cinder: Are you nuts man? Your blaming the CHARACTER instead of the bastards responsible. That is all kinds of wrong.
Your making the exact same mistake they (film makers) are.

Elektra could have been a great movie! And yes the director and writer are BOTH to blame and Marvel is too!!

@ Juggernaut

He's right man. He was just basing the X3 story off of the Astonishing X-Men comics. Brett Ratner screwed X3 up. Directors can change the story, kill any character, do basically whatever they want. He's a terrible director! The guy could only pull of Rush Hour which wasn't that great either. Penn could pull this off especially with Favraeu. I'm not pyched with Penn because Electra is the number one suckiest Marvel movie ever made though. Incredible Hulk was awesome and X2 is probably in the top five of best Superhero Movies ever made. Why? Because Bryan Singer was an awesome Director. Ratner's been screwing us over as have the other directors.

The only reason why a comic book movie can be pulled off is because of a director like Nolan, Favraeu, Singer, even Burton, and more.
ManThing
ManThing - 5/6/2009, 11:01 AM
guys, guys ..

I am detecting a note of mysogeny here so let's move away from discussing Elektra for a second.

Now it's very very simple. A screen play has a writer. If the writing is bad, then that means the writer is a bad writer. duh.

It's tru that the director that ok's a bad screenplay is to blame when the movie blows, but that doesn't erase the writer's hand in it at all. The bad writer is every bit a s culpable as the idiot that gives it the thumbs up.
TucsonRican
TucsonRican - 5/6/2009, 11:20 AM
Zak Penn did not write the screenplay for X2. He came up with a story that Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris made into a screenplay. But Bryan Singer and David Hayter (weird, he's the voice of Solid Snake for Metal Gear...) also got story cred, which counts as well. They also did Superman Returns.....

But he did write the screenplay for X3, as well as Last Action Hero, and (a personal fav) PCU.

BigMacYak
BigMacYak - 5/6/2009, 11:37 AM
Penn could probably come up with a good story but I definitely think a better writer (or the director) would be needed to polish it up. He doesn't seem to be good with character development.
Singer is great with character work especially with ensemble casts. That's why the first two X-Men were great. I read somewhere that except for two or three scenes, Edward Norton reworked most of The Incredible Hulk script putting more emphasis on character development and dialog. If I find the link, I'll put it up.
As for X3, that was pretty much the studio's fault. As much as I'd love to blame Ratner for that abortion, Fox is mainly to blame. Tom Rothman should roast in hell as Satan's personal sex toy!!!

@ Jugg, well yeah of course if the director isnt worth a damn (as was the case with Elektra, FF etc) a good script wont matter either..but a bad script with a bad director is going to give you a [frick]ing turd like Punisher Warzone..and before i hear "hey that was a great movie" from any delusional folks out there..fine if you liked all the blood and big guns, but im telling you that movie was shot and written by a team of retarded gibbons. As was Chun Li(shudder!). Ghost Rider is an example of a decently made movie with an awful plot. I think mark Stephen Johnson is a fairly decent director and he has great visual flair..but he sucks as a writer! He co wrote both Daredevil(which i liked anyway) and Ghost Rider and i think thats where the flaws in both of those movies lie.
