SuperHeroStuff: Top 10 Moments of 2014

Thus ends another glorious year of superhero/sci-fi awesomeness! Let’s take a moment to reflect back at some of our favorite news things from the years of our Groot, 2014. With so many awesome movies, shows, comics, events and announcements it was really hard to choose only 10!

10. Constantine (TV Series)

Based on Vertigo/DC’s HELLBLAZER, this Friday night monster-of-the-week approach to the dark arts has been a pretty fun ride. We’re hoping it gets the green light for more episodes or a second season but either way we’ll enjoy it whiles it’s still around.

9. Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who (TV Series)

Veteran Scottish actor Peter Capaldi started his run as Doctor Who; his brash, no-nonsense portrayal of the character is quite the departure from the likes of Matt Smith and David Tennant’s timey-wimey-ness but has added another facet to a character that has been evolving for over 50 years.

8. Birdman (Movie)

Michael Keaton examines the life of a former superhero actor trying to shed himself of his former vigilante persona…oh and he also made this movie called Birdman! The movie really is great and will probably win a boatload worth of awards for its story, actors and excellent camera work.

7. Batman: Assault on Arkham (DC Animated)

The Suicide Squad is getting their own flick in 2016 but DC animated gave us a little taste test of the Deadshot lead Task Force X. Your favorite super villain ‘do-gooders’(and we use that term loosely) with bombs implanted in their necks!

6. Original Sin (Marvel Event)

Who killed the Watcher? We’re not going to tell you but this awesome event from Marvel will! It also does a pretty cool job of exploring the secret origins of a lot of its main heroes.

5. X-Men: Days of Future Past (Movie)

Based on the classic time-traveling comic, one gets to see two different casts of X-Men meet up for the first time. Unfortunately, a lot of the best scenes and lines were given away in the trailer. However, the movie was still awesome and did a good job of resetting the X-Men movie universe which had managed to really scramble its timeline over the past decade. At least ‘Last Stand’ was unmade!

4. DC Announces Cinematic Universe

10 movies?! 10 frickin’ movies over the new 6 years featuring the biggest DC names to never see actual screen time! We all knew DC was mapping out a giant shared universe starting with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It worked for Marvel…why not for them? We’re looking forward to seeing how this all plays out in reality. DC doesn’t have a proven track record like Marvel Studios so projecting for 10 films seems a little over ambitious. Either way, the announcement was one of the coolest we’d seen all year!

3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer

Any doubts we had about the next generation of Star Wars movies was wiped away after this 88 second trailer hit in late November. Andy Serkis’ gravely voice reintroduced us to X-Wings, Storm Troopers, Speeders, Tattoine…holy crap that light saber looks sweet….and…AND NO FRICKIN WAY! IT’S THE MILLENNIUM FALCON FIGHTING AT LOW ALTITUDE!

2. The Flash (TV Series)

The Arrow spin-off series that has left us all going….wow, the Arrow is a bit of a violent sociopath! Grant Gustin is nailing his performance as Barry Allen/The Flash and Tom Cavanagh has done a great job as the evil (possibly?) Dr. Wells. Major credit to the folks over at CW for pulling so much of this show directly from the comic books and not pretending we’ve never heard of superpowers before (and or nailing their CGI and special effects). Everything looks movie quality. The show has figured out how to mix the perfect amount of cheesiness and seriousness into our Tuesday nights. The Reverse Flash storyline is heating up and we cannot wait to see it come to a full boil with some (fingers crossed) time travel action!

1. Marvel Studios

Let’s be honest, Marvel Studios won this year on so many levels we can just combine everything they did into the #1 spot.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Captain America: Winter Soldier
  • Phase 3 Announcements
  • Age of Ultron Trailer
  • Agents of SHIELD?

Did we miss something on our Top 10 list? We’d love to hear your Top 10 of 2014. Share yours in the comments below!

You silly puppets, tangled in the strings of which Marvel is better than the other, DC v Marvel, or whatever. There is something bigger going on that little to none seem to take note of.

Disney. Is. Winning.

how about Guardians of the galaxy (along with critics and audiences) shutting up the naysayers who said it would flop?
That was pretty epic.

Mister Funky Bunch speaks the truth.

I was at the Disney store two weeks ago getting a Christmas gift for my sister.

Seeing all the Star Wars and Marvel Comics merchandise...I remember thinking to myself Disney won, man....Disney won...

WB could buy Star Trek from Paramount, and would still be Pepsi Cola. And both DC and Star Trek have been around longer.

I have to say that I now have seen Guardians of the Galaxy twice. The first time I fell asleep during the movie and watched a second time to find myself drowsy again. Maybe you had to see it in the theater to appreciate the scope but I have to say that it wins the most overrated comic book movie award. Honestly, I just don't get it. Some parts were funny but the film on a whole didn't make much sense. The ending kinda sucked too. Sorry

Marvel Studios won with Captain America:The Winter Soldier alone, everything else they announced was just more fuel for the fire that keeps getting bigger.

Everything else just seemed pale in comparison to what Marvel Studios has done in 2014 & what will continue to do in 2015 & 2016.

Great list. I'd like to add my own personal favorite moment of 2014 as far as Comic Book Films go,
The Sony Hack of 2014. Exposing all sorts of ineptitude. But bringing so much entertainment and laughs to us all!
