The Best CBTV Ever - The Final 8! DC Live Action Fails, DC Animated Strong

8 TV Shows remain. DC Live Action is basically on every night right now, but they couldn't get a single show into the final 8. DC Animation going strong though, and how is Marvel going?

Sorry for the delay in articles guys! I've been a bit busy :(

Last week's article over this way....

The Battle

Pick one TV Show from each battle (copy and paste into comments), or leave it blank if you can't choose. You can still vote if you haven't seen a particular TV Show in any particular battle. I'll count the votes, and the winning TV Show goes to the next round, the losing TV Show is eliminated.

Daredevil takes on Superman? X-Men v The Avengers? Jessica Jones takes on S.H.I.E.L.D.? and Batman takes on the Justice League.... Sounds like that would be fun to watch.

1 Daredevil (2015-) v Superman: The Animated Series (1996-2000)

2 X-Men (1992-97) v The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (2010-13)

3 Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-) v Jessica Jones (2015-)

4 Batman: The Animated Series (1992-95) v Justice League Unlimited (2004-06)

Results From Round 3

Daredevil (2015-) 30 defeated Spider-Man (1994-98) 6
Although a lot of love for Spider-Man, the Man without Fear was way too strong.

X-Men (1992-97) 25  defeated Teen Titans (2003-06) 10
Another difficult decision for some, but 90s classic The X-Men comfortably.

The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (2010-13) 21 defeated The Flash (2014-) 14
This was close for a while, but EMH pulled away from DC's last remaining live action property.

Lucifer (2016-) 5 lost to Superman: The Animated Series (1996-2000) 29
Superman was not going to be taken down by the devil.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-) 19 defeated Justice League (2001-04) 18
THIS WAS EPICALLY CLOSE. I couldn't guess who would win at any point in time.... S.H.I.E.L.D. by just 1 vote, harsh luck for Justice League.

Batman: The Animated Series (1992-95) 26 defeated Young Justice (2010-) 8
Batman took down the kids.

Justice League Unlimited (2004-06) 22 defeated Agent Carter (2015-16) 13
Even Peggy Carter can't take down the Justice League.

The Walking Dead (2010-) 15 lost to Jessica Jones (2015-) 20
Jessica Jones won by 5 votes, The Walking Dead's recent seasons seem to be hurting it.

Yeah I know, "Batman: TAS is the best comic book cartoon of all time blah blah".

But I'm not a 90's kid, so I didn't grow up with it.

JL Unlimited on the other, was my shit as a kid.

1 Daredevil (2015-) v Superman: The Animated Series (1996-2000)

This one is tough because I'm actually in the process of rewatching Superman TAS, and I've gotta say, it holds up in a lot of ways. Daredevil is bringing dark, adult storylines to the table, but the Kryptonian is just too well done on that show not to vote for it.

VERDICT: Superman The Animated Series.

2 X-Men (1992-97) v The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (2010-13)

Another close call. Both of these shows are beloved because of their earnest, powerful representations of classic Marvel stories. The breaking point for me is how EMH is able to pay tribute to those events and yet still remain fast paced and take its content seriously. Sorry Storm, one too many "Winds, heed my call!!"

VERDICT:Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes

3 Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-) v Jessica Jones (2015-)

Jessica Jones has been my favorite Netflix addition so far because it was such a strong, personal struggle story that works as an allegory for abusive relationships. That said, if I were to judge it on its comic-bookiness, I'd have to say it suffers. AoS, for me, is a much stronger example of the Comic Book genre. They are the bystanders in a world of Gods and monsters that choose to fight back against the darkness, no matter what wacky ghost, alien, Inhuman or terrorist cell stands in their way. I know it has some cheesy moments and more than one poor character deciaion, but I dont care--I love this show.

VERDICT: Marvel's Agents of SHIELD

4 Batman: The Animated Series (1992-95) v Justice League Unlimited (2004-06)

Sad to see these shows going head to head in this round, because I do think they are both some of the strongest examples of what animated series can do (personally, I think Gargoyles has em both bear, but I know I'm in the minority there). I have to really nitpick their weaknesses t I make a decision and when it comes down to it, I think Batman has statistically more episode clunkers than the well constructed JLU. Both shows suffer from being rushed to cancel in their last seasons, but even the last season of JLU has a well conceived arc and gives many corners of the DCAU their due.

VERDICT: Justice League Unlimited

1 Daredevil (2015-) (I am only begrudgingly giving this to Daredevil. Super: TAS is still a really good show and is *the* Superman for me over Reeves, Cavill, Cain, or Routh)

2 I am displeased with you.

3 Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-) (This one was difficult, but AoS won out because it was more fun for me. BRING BACK TRIP)

4 I am furious with you.

1. Daredevil (2015-)

Superman: TAS is solid but unspectacular and while Daredevil season 2 was hit or miss it still had a lot of memorable high points that keep the series overall in the great category.

2. The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (2010-13)

X-Men doesn't hold up well enough to beat out a fantastic series that would have gone on longer but was a victim of The Avengers success (leading to Avengers Assemble).

3. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-)

If Jessica Jones had 1 more great season I'd lean in that direction but with only 1 I have to go with the show that has been consistently engaging and entertaining for 3 years now.

4. Batman: The Animated Series (1992-95)

I've watched more Justice League Unlimited but looking back its not as memorable as I thought it'd be. Batman: TAS is a classic for a reason.

Starting of with the second hardest choice this round. I love the DCAU as a whole, and I am very fond of Superman TAS. But Daredevil is one of the best things we got in terms of live action CBTV - if not the best (especially S1). Sad to vote against Supes, but it is what it is:

1 Daredevil (2015-)

Next one wasn't too hard. X-Men was something I loved growing up, I feel it still holds up well enough, and I'm still simply not very familiar with EMH. So a rather easy vote here for me (although I couldn't guess the final outcome of this since EMH is quite popular):

2 X-Men (1992-97)

Now to yet another "easy" pairing this round. I expected JJ to be one of my favourite CB related shows ever, but it just didn't work for me anywhere near as much as I'd hoped. I was quite unsure about AOS during the beginning of S1, but I did like it enough to stick with it (plus there was a decent MCU good will bonus involved at the start), and today it's one of my favourite shows and one of the few current CBTV shows I still follow religiously. Maybe (hopefully!) JJ will catch up with future appearances, but for now my vote is clear:

3 Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-)

Now this last one was the tough choice for me this round. Batman TAS is widely considered one the best as far as superhero cartoons go, and one of the best cartoons in general. And I do agree that it is a pretty groudbreaking and influential classic, with many high points in terms of character design, voice work, indiviual episodes etc. Only last round I was sure it'd make the final round for certain, and that it would have my vote on the way there.

But... JLU is a pretty darn good show in its own right, and after pondering a good while I realized that as a whole I actually prefer to watch it over TAS. The way the show manages to organically include such a huge variety of DC characters, the way it brings them to "life" through great animation and voice acting, the quality of the writing in terms of both dialogue and plots - a really impressive effort all around. The season long Cadmus arc alone is just superb. I watch at least parts of JLU more or less every year.

So after careful consideration my last pick for this round is one I didn't initially expect:

Justice League Unlimited (2004-06)
