Todd McFarlane's SPIDER-MAN #1 Cover Art Goes Up For Sale At Auction

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the cover art for Spider-Man #1 has gone up for sale at Heritage Auctions for a whopping $195,000. Originally published in 1990, it is one of the best-selling comic books of all-time, selling 2.35 million copies. Whether it now will end up selling for a record price is unknown, but there is still 19 days left to bid if you fancy emptying your savings accounts. Bidding closes at 10pm on July 25th before a live auction the following day. Todd McFarlane's "Torment" is a beloved tale for most fans of Spider-Man, and while the writing isn't considered to be the best (something McFarlane himself has acknowledged in the past) the art is fantastic, making this piece a must-buy. If, you know, you're rich.

what a classic cover,2.35 million copies is alot of comics,i think the biggest selling is x-men 1 with something like 7.5 million copies.

i would love it,big spidey fan & that would look great on my wall framed next to the original comic.

Todd is a classic Spider-Man artist in line with Ditko & Romita Sr.
He always made Spidey look cool & the new movie has taken many of Todd's great Spider-Man poses & used them in the film..the final web-swing pose at end looks just like a McFarlane cover!

Todd too Spiderman to the next level as far as visual aesthetic. It's upsetting that the majority never want to recognize.

Back in the day, when these covers were first coming out, McFarlane was the top artist in comics. His stuff was different and exciting. There's been an army of imitators since, so his stuff tends to look unspectacular now; but back when he began, there was nothing like it. I mean, no one had ever drawn Spider-Man's webbing like TF did.

@Chloefornication what are you talking about???

Anyway, I like Todd's work, but I would not pay that much to get it. If I had that kind of money, I'd get a corvette, not a drawing.

@riseofLOGANX36

I agree that new movie suit is weak compared to the actual comic book version but some of the moves & poses in movie are very McFarlane influenced without a doubt.

Best way to think of these comic book movies is that they are What If's (Marvel) or Ekseworlds (DC) & recognize that an "exact" translation of comic books WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

Sin City movie was pretty damn close as directly lifted from page to film but really I want fresh takes on familiar work..you want the comic,read the comic!

Such a great cover. To this day Torment is my favorite Spidey story. At no point does Spidey get the upper hand. He just gets his ass handed to him all up and down the streets of NY for 6 issues straight. It was done in such a dark and brutal way too. Even in the end Spidey didnt really win...more like he survived.

its very rare that super hero stories are done like this one.
