ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #4 Sees An Unexpected Character Deliver Classic "Great Power" Line - SPOILERS

Today's issue of Ultimate Spider-Man #4 sees Peter Parker finally hear the classic "Great Power" line, but it's not Uncle Ben who delivers it. Instead, it's someone we'd bet that you won't see coming...

In the new Ultimate Universe, twenty years have passed since The Maker prevented a radioactive spider from biting a young Peter Parker. He likewise prevented the creation of any other superheroes and formed a secret council to rule the world from the shadows.

Three months ago, Tony Stark (now going by Iron Lad) sent Peter - a married father of two - that same radioactive spider along with a "picotech" suit and warnings of The Maker's Council.

The spider's bite gifted Peter amazing powers that he used to aid a masked vigilante called the Green Goblin against an assassin sent by Wilson Fisk, an agent of the Maker's Council. Somehow, the Goblin was able to take control of Peter's suit and expose his identity. However, he also revealed himself as Harry Osborn, the billionaire heir of Oscorp Industries.

In today's Ultimate Spider-Man #4, Peter and MJ go out for a meal with Harry and his wife, Gwen Stacy. The couples get to know each other a little better, but as their evening draws to a close, the Green Goblin offers the web-slinger some sage advice:

"With great power comes great responsibility."

Yes, in this reality, it's Harry who gives Spider-Man the mantra we've known him to live his life by. Uncle Ben is alive in Ultimate Spider-Man, and there's nothing to suggest he'll meet his maker anytime soon. With that in mind, perhaps it will be the Goblin who dies, inspiring Peter to embrace his newfound identity as a wall-crawling superhero.

Norman Osborn and Aunt May are both already dead, and Jonathan Hickman continues making some sweeping changes to these characters in his new Ultimate Universe. Fans have spent years demanding Marvel Comics give them a married Peter, but whether this was what they envisioned is hard to say.

Ultimate Spider-Man #4 ends with Peter still not telling MJ about his superpowers and, given Harry's advice, it feels like that might cause problems for the hero down the line.

Check out an excerpt from today's issue below.

At least this is part of his motivation, unlike NWH when he's already been Spider-Man for half a decade (not counting the blip).

@ObserverIO - I disagree, he heard the phrase when the time was right. Sure he already was Spider-Man for a while, but it was at that point that he finally understood what that really meant.
Vigor

@ObserverIO - he was barely spiderman then tho. He becomes the spidermam we are familiar with in the after credits, hiding his identity, focusing on his OWN abilities, swinging skyscrapers...

And this is after May delivers that fateful line and then dies from her wounds

Homecoming, far, and no way home, were essentially the spiderman prelude chapters we never asked for but soooo needed. Great way to segue him into the MCU world when there's other heroes such as Ironman

@Urubrodi - He already seemed to understand what it meant when he explained his motivation in Civil War.

@Vigor - But he was still a crime-fighting superhero rather than a selfish, money and fame motivated celebrity.

@ObserverIO - He understood what it meant to be a hero, but being Spider-Man goes beyond that. He learned throughout the movie that everyone deserved a second change and needed help. His Civil War version wouldn't have bothered to help the villains out, he would have thought that they got what they deserve, which was also Dr. Strange's view. It was May that showed him the correct path and why she said the phrase to him.

@Urubrodi - So it's not about the responsibility to help people with his powers by fighting super villains, but to help the villains instead by... not fighting them? Is he not gonna fight villains anymore? That sounds more like telling him to stop being Spider-Man and help bad people with his mind and through charities rather than with his superpowered fists.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 4/24/2024, 9:23 AM
@ObserverIO - lol what a way to distort what I said... May wanted him to help everyone, and not to let the villains meet their fate because of their past choices, to give them another chance, cause that has always been what Spider-Man does, he doesn't give up on people
ObserverIO

@Urubrodi - Seems strange to reduce the phrase to him adjusting how he is Spider-Man rather than why he is Spider-Man in the first place.

Also, he was trying to help Vulture in Homecoming (he even says "I'm trying to help you"), he was trying to help Mysterio in Far From Home and he was busy trying to help the Sinister Six (or 5) in NWH before she got killed. So he was already that kind of a Spider-Man.

He was regretting trying to help them because of the collateral damage. That's when she said that he wasn't wrong to do what he was doing. So if anything it's more of a confirmational moment rather than a motivational moment, because he'd already been motivated to help people with his powers since before Civil War.

They should update that classic line to inspire hot actresses.

With great boobs come great responsibility.

@DocSpock - I think you're thinking too narrowly, my friend. Hot actresses have other ass...ets ;)

@DocSpock - Naturally I was referring to the responsibility that their fame allows them when they are acting as influencers, particularly when it comes to matters of cultural and/or political importance. My cat just happened to step on the period key on my keyboard while I was grabbing a beer mid-word.

(Spoiler alert: I don't have a cat ;))

I don't have that same cat, and he's always getting me into trouble.

@marvel72 - It's good if you are tired of status quo Peter. Peter is happily married to MJ with kids before getting his powers so it's a refreshing take. I'm sure some elseworlds comic series has done it before but this aims to be long term series so I'm enjoying it so far. Hopefully they don't get lazy and revert him into unhappy downtrodden Peter.

I just had a thought. What if in this version Harry dies (and so becomes this earth's "Ben Parker" or "Gwen"), and due to his death, 6160's Gwen becomes this earth's evil Green Goblin? It could be a fun twist, that respects the seeds that were planted in this issue! Gwen could blame Peter for Harry's death (like she blamed Peter for his father's death in the 616 universe), and "honor" Harry by taking his mantle and avenging his death!

@DiegoMD - Dude did you read this issue online like an hour ago? I just got done reading the issue, then browsed the comments and someone called Diego said the same kinda thing almost exactly - really surreal 😂

(P.S. I agree that your idea would be an interesting way for them to take it!)
