BOX OFFICE: Cowboys & Aliens On Track To Debut At A Disappointing $40 Million!

Despite early reviews of the movie being positive, the expected box office debut of Iron Man director Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens is looking likely to be considerably underwhelming...

Early buzz for Cowboys & Aliens may have been positive, but with a low rating of 44% (based on 131 reviews) over at Rotten Tomatoes, there's even more bad news for the latest movie from Jon Favreau. The box office predictions are not looking all that good for the upcoming movie. Of course, many comic book fans will be wondering whether or not it manages to knock Captain America: The First Avenger from the top spot! Here is an excerpt from the report over at Deadline.

Sources are telling me that today's seeming $15M debut may add up to at most a $40M weekend which is below the studio's own lowball projections of $45+M. (This should have been done as a comedy!) Problem is that the budget has been pegged by insiders at $163M-$200M.

Tracking had been lagging especially with women of all ages until last Thursday when it popped up. Good thing Universal is only on the hook for 25% financing and domestic-only distribution with DreamWorks taking 50% and Relativity Media 25%. Paramount is distributing foreign. Sony Pictures' Smurfs is looking like $10M today for $29M weekend which is respectable for its target audience of very young moviegoers.

What do you guys make of this? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

There was really nothing interesting in the trailers for me to make me go see it and I had guessed it would do generally bad, money-wise at least.

This is because a lot of people had never seen the graphic novel.

well I was telling this since the first trailer was released.GoD!!! why am I always correct.I will repeat it again..

"Third Biggest bomb of the year after Green Latrine and mars needs Moms".

The internet forms a very small portion of the average movie goer and the nerds on this site are of no importance so even people on this site root for this shitfest,the movie gonna bomb.

what next "gays & lesbians" or "Rednecks and Predators".

i believe people dont want to see a cowboy movie with sci-fi element. i believe Wild Wild West still left a bad taste in peoples mouth.

teabag: Because Marvel aren't paying me to report good things about this movie! Just wait until the weekend when I start reporting the actual figures and inflating its budget to $600M! Bwah-ha-ha!!!

Well, I was expecting it to be a little low.It does have some competition.

Harry Potter is in it's third week and it made $47M last week, so it's still doing business.

Captain America is in it's second week and because most films fall about 40-50% in it's second week, it was expected to make at least $35M.

Friends With Benefits is in it's second week, too.People who either saw Harry Potter or Cap last week may want to see it this week.

And there are other movies taking a bite out of the box office.The Smurfs, like you mentioned in the article, Crazy, Stupid, Love., a movie with good reviews and a good cast and Attack the Block.

While Attack the Block isn't playing everywhere, people in those select cities may have opted to catch it instead of Cowboys & Aliens.

@Goldenavengers
My opionion is a fact.Note down that in your diary.

sometimes,Truth/facts bite hard.I feel sorry for those who were expecting anything from this.Same happened to me when I was served with DRAGON BALL the movie.

Genre mash up when both genres are flop,an overrated director,an overrated duo of writers and terribly awful source material and half-hearted execution.The worst unintentional comedy of the year.

like Josh said "they better had made it a comedy."

CB&A looks good but i put my money back into seeing CAP again today-and it's better the second time and will be the next-the Human Torch seen is f*cking cool-now the feeling of seeing CAP again gives one the taste for an ADULT BEVERAGE-so GO CAP GO!!!!!!

Not that surprised only because the film never grabbed me. I will be doing repeat business with Captain America, loved the movie. Maybe I'll walk in on C&A afterwards but definitely not paying for it

Oh and I was told the much ado about nothing nude scene is just that, NADA, it was a ploy to suck boys in

@FriendlyNeighbourhoodJoSh

im not saying Cowboys and Aliens is like Wild Wild West. most likely Cowboys and Aliens is good cause it had alot of postive reviews but having a Cowboy movie mixed with Sci-Fi or Supernatural seems like it does not work i.e. Wild Wild West and Jonah Hex.

@marvel72

nah have not seen Captain America yet but i will watch it tomorrow i cant wait to watch the movie. seem like you enjoy it so must likely i will enjoy it also :P

@magic8: LOL ikr? More money than most people will make in a lifetime.

It was an okay movie, if you've seen the trailers, you can just about predict everything that happens throughout the movie. And the reason for the aliens invading Earth was incredibly stupid.
WarnerBrother
WarnerBrother - 7/29/2011, 7:13 PM
It's likely to have a hard time because the western genre tends to draw an older audience like myself. (43 years old)That's good for a straight up western like True
Grit or 3:10 to Yuma, but a problem for Cowboys and Aliens which was weak in interest,both for women in a age groups and the target demo of young males.
I took both my sons(11 and 12 years old) with me and they enjoyed the hell out of it.

I just saw it today at the 4pm showing (I live in Idaho) and it was packed, so clearly people wanted to see it. I thought it was okay/good. Not amazing by any means, but entertaining, Craig and Ford were pretty good in their roles, I was more impressed with Ford's character, who you cared about. He did a great acting job in this film. Sold his character, as well did Craig.
