Deadline is reporting that Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark; Cherry) has joined the cast of Marvel Studios' upcoming Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again.
The trade adds that he is potentially playing an original character named Liam, who is simply described as an ambitious guy from Staten Island. Whether he has a comic book counterpart remains to be seen.
Gandolfini is the first major addition to the cast, which is headlined by Charlie Cox (Daredevil; Spider-Man: No Way Home) as the titular Man Without Fear and Vincent D'Onofrio (Daredevil; Hawkeye) as Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. the Kingpin.
The up-and-coming actor is best known for playing the young Tony Soprano in The Many Saints of Newark, taking over the iconic role from his late father, James Gandolfini. His recent credits also include Paramount+'s The Offer, Apple TV+'s Cherry, HBO's The Deuce, and Warner Bros.' Ocean's Eight.
The series will be part of Phase 5 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, serving as a standalone sequel to the Daredevil Netflix series, which ran for three seasons, and will pick up Murdock's story sometime after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Hawkeye, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. It will be a direct sequel to Echo.
Daredevil: Born Again will reportedly consist of eighteen episodes and will launch in 2024, exclusively on Disney+.
