James Gunn Defends His DCU Approach After Being Asked What Various Different Projects Are "Building Towards"

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has once again taken to social media to defend his approach to the DCU and the vastly different projects that have been released on the big and small screens up to this point.

DC Studio co-CEO James Gunn is often criticized for his approach to the DCU, with many seeming to feel that the various big and small screen projects that have been released up to this point - movies Superman, Supergirl, and Clayface, along with HBO Max shows Creature Commandos, Peacemaker Season 2, and Lanterns - are too far apart from a tonal standpoint and don't seem to be building towards anything.

The Superman director took to Threads to respond, arguing that individual stories should stand on their own rather than exist for the sole purpose of setting up some kind of massive crossover event. He compared the DCU to Star Wars, where multiple stories unfold across different mediums (without the tonal variety).

Gunn also confirmed that the "Superman Saga" will continue through Man of Tomorrow and beyond, bringing together characters introduced throughout the DCU.

"DCU is just an alternate universe; we can enter at any location or time and tell THAT story. I dislike the idea that individual stories aren't meaningful unless they lead to something else. People not understanding this is strange to me, because Star Wars has essentially been doing this for 50 years across movies, shows, games and books, admittedly without the tonal variety. Now, this doesn't mean there isn't connectivity."

"The Superman Saga starts with Superman and travels into Man of Tomorrow and onward, and contains many characters we've introduced in other stories. But that doesn't mean those other stories only exist to set up what's happening there. I would love people to be seeing Clayface because it's a great, fun horror movie unto itself, not because of where else Clayface will show up three movies from now."

While many agree with Gunn's take, others feel that he is losing sight of what a shared universe should be setting out to accomplish, and while individual projects should work as standalone stories, fans should also have something to invest in and look forward to down the line.

We're sure Gunn and Peter Safran do have plans to bring these stories and characters together that they simply haven't divulged yet, but a lot of fans are eager for just a few more crumbs here and there.

Gunn recently revealed that he is already working on his next directorial project while putting the finishing touches on Man of Tomorrow, and there's speculation that this might turn out to be a Justice League reboot (or at least, some kind of team-up/event movie).

It boggles my mind that ppl think this guy is better than Snyder at these films and world building. He literally should be doing Saturday morning cartoons. Or actually, he is. Just that they are live action and some absolute fools keep giving him millions of dollars to make absolute shite.

@Colton - 100% agree, this guy should've never been put in charge. DC is just bleeding money these days with stupid projects.

@Colton - I mean, he is a better writer and director, it's not even close. He is just making the wrong project choices.

@Colton - like them both but I like Snyder more some of solo movies flash and Wonder Woman sequel sucked that was out of his control did like costumes for characters he did snyder is more dark side of dc while James Gunn is more towards 70-80 comics version his take on Batman hard to say until we see Batman costume and in action unknown if gunn Batman will more 70 always saying chumb to robin or more dark kinda in 80-90 comics

@Colton - Right? I couldn’t wait to see Batman being rapes in prison or it least being referenced. His fathering a child with Lois also would have been epic. If he had a chance , he also could have shown us when and where Dick Grayson died. I agree with some complaints about Gunn but I want him over the DCU 💯 percent over Snyder.

@Colton - Warner Bros is to blame. The studio is responsible for all the mess that has transpired over the years. James is just a hired Gunn.

@Colton - I was hopeful because of how good his GotG trilogy was. Seeing his version of DCU so far has mostly been a disappointment. He just doesn’t seem to have a feel for DC, the bigger names anyway. Suicide Squad was good.

Nobody wants the MCU version of DC and Gunn knows it. He hires the writers and directors BEFORE they decide what the movie is going to be.
Marvel movies are made by a committee of talent-less producers whom employ the hired hands AFTER they decide what the movie is going to be. They require certain scenes that are already being worked on in pre-visualization, years before they hire the [frick]ing writers and directors..
Gunn doesn't start filming the movie UNTIL THE SCRIPT IS FINISHED. Now you clowns will say lOoK aT tHe MoNeY mArVeL mAkEs.. we all know more than half of the mcu movies are mid and have low rewatch value. Everyone was focused on Thanos. 1 bad Iron Man movie, 2 bad Thor movies, 2 bad Ant-Man movies and 1 mid movie, GOTG and Cap trilogy was perfect, with Avenger movies stringing everyone along in between. The cracks absolutely started to show after Endgame. Why? BECAUSE THERE WAS NO PLAN. Phase 5 showed Kang was the baddie but Majors is a POS and he's non existent. Multiverse of Madness was a hot mess behind the scenes. Sam Raimi got a fat check just to do what he's told. So they were screwed once again. What do they do? Break the emergency glass and get Jackman to come back for a Deadpool movie.. Thunderbolts was the best reviewed non team-up movie and it underperformed. Everything else from phase underperformed or flopped. Remember The Marvels? Black Widow was so lucky Florence decided to join the crew. Shang Chi should've had his third movie coming out by now.. Spider-Man is always a home run literally every time.. even TAS2 made a profit and that's the least liked Spidey movie.
Cap 4 flopped. F4 underperformed. Once again they break the emergency glass and bring back RDJ.

The DCU is three movies in and two of them have higher ratings than all but 5 of the entire DCEU. People really misread how bad Joker 2 damaged the DC brand. This was after all of those terrible movies after Justice League (not including Blue Beetle and The Batman). Joker 2 was the final nail.
It was such an easy time to pile on anything DC related. Also people treat movie studios like sports teams tor some [frick]ing reason. Superman, Peacemaker, Creature Commando, The Penguin, Lanterns are proof that the general audience likes the DCU. The ratings and viewership prove that. Despite what bias you see on here or social media, THE MAJORITY LIKE IT.
Let me say that again: THE MAJORITY LIKE IT. His approach is smart because Batman or WW would sell tickets no matter. Man Of Tomorrow coming after Clayface and Lanterns will help way more than coming after Black Adam 2 and Joker 2..

Comic nerds only cared about aCcUrAcy once James Gunn was in charge. They never complain about Secret Invasion. Some people even said that was one of the best shows ever..

It’s building towards Gunn getting fired and another eventual reboot. While I agree that each film should stand on its own, the low quality of each of those films is the problem

@Nonameforme - It means Superman, the flagship superhero and the OG, was a bloated mess with heavy handed and out of place political messaging, a weak and whiny Supes who lost it over nonsense and inspired nothing and no one, a supporting cast more entertaining to watch than their lead, an unusually dark and sexually charged twist to his origin that destroyed the hope messaging of his original parents reasoning for sending him here, an unclear threat, and a Lex who shits people point blank in the head but will be a co lead and presumably anti hero in the next, along with basic pacing and editing issues and a story that begins in the middle act.

I don't know if I care if it builds to anything or not, I just think they are stupid choices when you are trying to get your studio off the ground.

Peacemaker, Creature Commando's, Lanterns(Which really wasn't about Green Lanterns, good or not), and Clayface all before you get to smarter choices is very weird to me.

BUT, to be fair, we haven't seen it yet, so I don't know, maybe it'll do a good job introducing characters to the universe.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 10/25/2026, 12:40 PM
@Amaru - I mean, Lanterns was still the #1 show on HBO last week and Clayface has made back its budget in a single weekend. I think as far as studio setups, Supergirl was his only misstep so far. Now, you said studio, but if you actually meant that this isn’t how you want a shared universe to be introduced, that’s different.
Amaru
Amaru - 10/25/2026, 2:43 PM
@OmegaBlack13 - Lanterns could have been the #1 show on the planet for the last year and it wouldn't change how I feel about it, it wasn't a Green Lantern show.

@Truebeliever333 - it built him up moreso then anything else as he grew to understand Hal somewhat by the end.

That’s the tragedy of their relationship in that it took one of them dying to get closer.

Plus him letting Noah go who is someone shown to have been actively fighting his programming and wanting to be human (akin to John and his own upbringing)while making sure he takes on the responsibility just in case if he does succumb to it made sense as did letting go of Kerry who killed Hal out of fear and who wouldn’t have wanted for her to go to jail.
Truebeliever333
Truebeliever333 - 10/25/2026, 3:45 PM
@TheVisionary25 - I disagree. It made him less of a hero for sure. Not even heroic at times. The show actively harmed John and Hal.
