Andre Tricoteux Talks 'Colossus'; Says He'll Be "Really Traditional To The True Comic Book Story"
With Deadpool set to hit theaters February 12 of next year, actor Andre Tricoteux took the time to talk about the heavy-hitter he plays in the upcoming superhero film, and revealed how he'll have some "serious disagreements with several people". Hit the jump to check it out!
When it was revealed that Daniel Cudmore declined the offer to reprise his role as Colossus in Deadpool, it was revealed (via set videos) that Once Upon A Time and Seventh Son actor Andre Tricoteux took on the mantle and became the new Colossus! Now, since this was revealed, we’ve had many people praise Andre Tricoteux’s performance and talk about his role in the film, but now, Andre himself has stepped up and talked about what his role will bring to the highly anticipated movie!
During an interview with ComicBook.com, Andre explained how he prepped himself for the role by doing plenty of research, and staying in contact with his brother, whose favorite character was Colossus. “I definitely had a good understanding of him. I’m a comic book fan, like everybody else. I enjoy X-men, so I had a pretty good understanding about him. Actually, one of my brothers is kind of a fanatic, and his favorite character is Colossus as well, so he knew everything about the guy. So he was my first call.” He then added, “And then doing the research, and kind of getting more of his…I was familiar with him, but I wasn’t 100 percent familiar with all of the backstory of him. As I got my hooks into the guy, and did my research on him and stuff, I got a pretty good understanding of him.”
Tricoteux then spoke on how he and Tim Miller wanted to keep his character really close to his comic-book personality by giving him a Russian accent and things of that sort. “It was very important for [director Tim Miller] and the rest of the Deadpool folks that we keep this Colossus really traditional to the true comic book story. You’ve seen the look of him is different. Obviously, I think Tim’s already leaked this, but he’s got a Russian accent. We kept him really traditional to the true comic book version.”
He then tells what the major difference is between his incarnation of Colossus, and the versions we’ve seen of him in the previous X-Men films. “That’s going to be the major difference. I think with Deadpool too, you’re going to get a little bit more backstory on Colossus and kind of see who he is and how he views the world, and how he views himself in the world. And I think that differs a little bit because I don’t think you’ve been able to get that with Colossus in some of the previous X-Men movies.” This should certainly be great news for anyone who’s a fan of Piotr Rasputin A.K.A. Colossus!
When asked about if his character will do a “fastball special,” and if we’ll see ties to Xavier School, Andre reluctantly responded and said, “I would say that would be fair [laughs], but I’m not going to confirm that. That would be a fair assumption.”
After confirming that he’s done reshoots for the film, he then spoke about his experience on the set, and told how he had a great time with everyone on the set. “I can’t give away too much storyline, but Colossus does have some serious disagreements with several people. I’ve really enjoyed working on this film. It’s a great team. Tim was great to work with. Ryan [Reynolds] was great. The guy’s just awesomely talented, and he’s so funny, and he’s just perfect for this Deadpool character.” He then continued, “The script is really well done, and it’s such a good story and so well written. [Rhett] Reese and Paul [Wernick] just did such a great job on that script. Everybody was good. Ed Skrein, Brianna, Gina [Carano] was fantastic. Everybody was really great to work with. I don’t know if I have one favorite scene. I would say the whole thing was just great, and like I said, Colossus had some disagreements with several people in the movie, and I think people are going to enjoy that.”
Ever since Marvel began to put out post credit scenes, many fans have sat through the entire credits just to see what they had in store! Tim Miller recently teased that Deadpool will also have a post credit tag that sets up for future films! With that said, Tricoteux shared his thoughts about the future of Colossus in the X-Men franchise. “Well, I think just the by the nature of having Colossus in Deadpool kind of ties them together. That kind of gives the audience kind of a notion of what could or may happen in the future, in terms of coming together. I can’t really discuss anything about the post-credits teaser.”
We’re pretty confident that Deadpool won’t be the last time we see Colossus, but, will Tricoteux be willing to get back in the CGI-suit and play the character one more time? Who wouldn’t!? “I’d love to do it if the opportunity came around. Yes, I would love to.” What do you think about the actor’s latest thoughts on Colossus and Deadpool? Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. Directed by Tim Miller, while starring Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa Carlysle), T.J. Miller (Weasel), with Ed Skrein, and Brianna Hildebrand (Ellie Phimister), the much-hyped Deadpool is scheduled to open in theaters on February 12, 2016.
