We were already plenty excited for Deadpool 3, but when a first look at the movie dropped...well, anticipation went through the roof. The Merc with the Mouth's costume was already pretty much perfect, but to see Hugh Jackman suited up in Wolverine's classic comic book costume was nothing short of mind-blowing.
Filming has halted due to the Hollywood strikes, but Entertainment Weekly caught up with director Shawn Levy at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival to get some intel on Logan's new look.
"Like the rest of the world, I've waited two decades to see Wolverine in a whole movie with Deadpool, and I don't know if this is our last shot at Wolverine on screen, so I was going to make goddamned sure we get the old yellow and blue just once, and that we get it right."
Explaining that the team working on Deadpool 3 went through "multiple, multiple, multiple iterations and fittings" to get the suit right, Levy added, "It also helps that I'm making this movie within the MCU, so I have access to an army of the nerdiest nerds available to a Marvel project."
Understandably reluctant to give too much away, the filmmaker went on to say he and Ryan Reynolds "wanted our movie to be grounded and not feel like a bunch of physical environments filmed on a soundstage," hence why we've seen so many set photos. That led to the release of the aforementioned photo, but Levy says he's been buoyed by what's proven to be an "overwhelmingly positive" reaction.
Of course, those photos also showed what appears to be The Void, lending weight to the rumours this movie will explore the Multiverse. Asked about the many rumoured cameos, the director played coy but confirmed at least some of what we've heard is correct.
"I'd rather not weigh in on that, but I'll say this: The rumors of actors, singers, sports stars who are all apparently in Deadpool 3 are fabulous. If all I read was the internet, I would have the greatest cast ever assembled in the history of cinema, so I'll simply say that some of those rumors are true, and some of them aren't."
Alongside Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool franchise vets Karan Soni (Dopinder), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio), and Rob Delaney (Peter) are all set to return in this threequel.
Emma Corrin is expected to play Cassandra Nova, while Matthew Macfadyen will likely take on the role of a TVA agent named Paradox. It's also been confirmed that Jennifer Garner will reprise her role as Elektra, with Liev Schreiber, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen among the many names rumoured to appear.
While a delay due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes is possible, Deadpool 3 is currently set to be released in theaters on May 3, 2024.
