Simon Kinberg Confirms DEADPOOL Ties Into X-MEN; Teases New Trailer, Pansexuality, & More

Earlier this afternoon, we saw X-Men: Apocalypse writer/producer Simon Kinberg discuss Bryan Singer's latest X-Men sequel in-depth and now we have more from Kinberg as he shares quite a bit about 2016's biggest wildcard: Deadpool.

There's quite a bit to cover, so let's delve right in!

First off, in case anyone was wondering whether or not Ryan Reynolds got in any trouble for walking away with the Deadpool suit, which we've already seen him have some fun with, and well, it turns out he didn't as stealing the suit was essentially a part of his acting process. Kinberg, who's a producer on the film, with a laugh, admitted they didn't want to interrupt Reynolds' highly intricate method acting: "No trouble at all. We wanted him to stay in character so we let him have whatever he wants." Sounds like Reynolds could have walked away with a little more than just a suit if he so chose.

As for the rest of the film, Kinberg confirmed that, unlike the Fantastic Four reboot, this Tim Miller-directed film takes place in the same universe as the über-popular X-Men films, however, he does add that Deadpool will take place in the present whereas Apocalypse takes place in the 1980s:

“It takes place within the X-Men universe and references that universe. It’s not the same time period as our past tense X-Men movies, like First Class, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse take place in the past and Deadpool takes place in the present, but it acknowledges everything that’s happened in those other movies and the universe, and like you said Colossus is in it and other characters from the X-Men world.”

That sounds about right, and it should be reassuring to hear that Deadpool could potentially cross paths with more than just Colossus (and maybe Wolverine) in any future installments. Also, it should be noted that Kinberg mentioned "other characters from the X-Men world" are in the movie, so who else, outside of Colossus & Negasonic Teenage Warhead, should we expect?

The interview then shifts gears as it discusses the highly enthusiastic level of fan interest for the film and how nearly every video/article/comment posted online referring to and/or featuring Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth manages to go viral. When asked whether he noticed the kind of love Deadpool receives online, Kinberg admitted he had and also revealed that Deadpool's inherent likability and vocal fanbase was a major reason behind why he initially championed the idea of making the long-rumored movie:

I did notice that, but I also feel like everything with Deadpool explodes on the internet. I knew that there was a fervent fanbase for Deadpool and I’ve been a huge fan of the comics—it’s one of the reasons I really advocated for making a movie—but I’m still constantly surprised by just how broad that fanbase is. I felt it when we were at Comic-Con this year; in a world of Batman and X-Men and Captain America and these huge characters it felt like Deadpool carried the same kind of weight, which was surprising. So yeah, I noticed that the same way I noticed Ryan dressed up for Halloween taking over the internet for 24 hours.

One comment that recently went viral on the interwebs was regarding Deadpool's pansexuality, a characteristic lifted straight from the comics. In case you were wondering how this is addressed in the upcoming film, Kinberg explains that "while we don’t explore it in depth in this film, it’s definitely alluded to." He goes on further to explain that this film for the most part only covers his romance with Morena Baccarin's Vanessa Carlysle, and that the topic of his pansexuality is something that has been left open to explore further in future films.

As for the tone and what will ultimately differentiate Deadpool from 2016's comic book movie juggernauts, which include X-Men: Apocalypse, Captain America: Civil War, & Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Kinberg gives a simple answer: it's tone. "It’s radical in tone, it’s radical in form, it’s radical in the level of violence. It’s just a different movie, not just from other comic book movies but I think from any other action movie that’s out there right now." Well, if the first trailer wasn't a clear indication, this comment should surely be more than enough to suggest we're going to be in for something truly special next February.

Speaking of the trailer, it sounds like a second theatrical trailer is on its way fairly soon and Kinberg's already seem a "pretty awesome" rough cut. When should we expect the trailer? December! Could it join the Star Wars: The Force Awakens party on December 18th? Eh, that's tough to say with 20th Century Fox already slating the first X-Men: Apocalypse trailer there, but it's not entirely out of the realm of possibilty, although it's more likely than not to debut a bit earlier. As for new footage? Kinberg teased: "Ryan’s creating new footage and material every single day, so I’m assuming he’ll do something new on the internet in the next week or so. I don’t know if you saw that Hugh Jackman piece that he did." Oh, of course we did, quite hard to miss.

Throughout the production process, something interesting happened as many fans and critics alike began to notice on Twitter and on other platforms that Reynolds was gradually becoming more and more like Wade Wilson. Kinberg also noticed the transformation and commented on the situation as he attributed all of Deadpool's success to the talented actor:

I’ve worked on a lot of movies, comic book any otherwise, and I don’t know that I’ve ever seen an actor as perfectly suited to a part as Ryan is to Deadpool. It’s just something that comes so naturally to him. It’s one of the reasons why he creates so many of those viral pieces, because I think he has so much fun being Deadpool that he’s Deadpool on and off set.

I think many would agree that Reynolds as Deadpool is arguably the most perfect casting in a comic book movie ever, possibly the most perfect casting in any movie period. Kinberg further elaborated on Reynolds:

Yeah he’s fun. The radical-ness of the movie, the fun of the movie, the sort of mischief of the movie—that would be the best word is “mischief”—is something that translates to the way the movie was made too. There was so much freedom to making the movie, I think because the studio understood that it has to be a radical film, a hard-R, and it has to satisfy the core fans, it just was allowed to be in all the best ways a weirder film than pretty much any other movie a studio is gonna release.

Finally, with Deadpool receiving a lot of positive buzz from the studio, with everyone involved reportedly very pleased with how good the movie actually is, Kinberg broached the topic of a potential sequel.

"It’s certainly the hope, and there is conversation about what the idea would be and perhaps which characters we would bring in to a sequel. The writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, were a really integral part of the process. Our focus, like all of us, is on finishing the film, so I think as soon as we finish the film we’ll be talking seriously about the sequel and then we’ll wait a couple months and see how the movie does. Hopefully the movie will do great and we can keep making these movies, because I do think there’s a lot more story to tell. I’m assuming it’ll come out somewhere whether it’s on the internet or the DVD eventually, but on every single take there’s like an embarrassment of riches of alternate takes, whether it’s Ryan or T.J. Miller, pretty much any character in the movie just goofing around and coming up with other lines, ideas, abs. It’d be fun to keep making these movies because it doesn’t feel like we’ll run out of juice."

Well, there's a lot to digest here, but based on what we've heard, with each passing day, Deadpool is sure sounding more and more like a winner.

I still don't understand what Pansexual means, literally.
I mean, If you are sexually attracted to your own sex, you're a Homosexual. If you like the opposite sex, then you're heterosexual. If you're completely averse to any sexual intimacy, then you're Asexual (it's really more of a disorder than an actual sexuality). There isn't any room for anything else here....

and take a character I love , Wonder Woman, and.make her casting abysmal.......

Everyone seems to think the major point of contention with Gadot is her physique but for me it's her acting ability that is the real issue.

She's terrible.
Her Fast and Furious work was cringe worthy.
Just look at the clips on Youtube.
You can tell she's a "model-turned-actress".

She looks like Wonder Woman to me, though. Very much so.
I just wish they'd picked someone who was at least proven and could possibly hold a franchise. Her only body of work doesn't instill faith in me.

I could be wrong though, so I guess we'll just see how she does.

1. Being Asexual isn't a disorder, that's actually kind of a dick thing to say.
2. Gender and Sex are two different things. Gender is your identity/psychological self, sex is your physical jiggly bits. Pansexual people are attracted to all people of all genders, wether the other person is non binary (is neutral), fluctuating through genders, trans, cis (gender aligns with sex), etcetera

@Crabnado @WinterOstritch : When i was at Uni, we were taught briefly that it was in fact a disorder, as per the DSM-IV. It afflicts a very small percent of the population anyway.

Thanks for explaining the Pansexuality part though. When we do talk about sexuality, i think we are pretty much talking about sexual attraction and your biologically assigned sex, rather than gender. I guess i'll have you think about what you've said in order to broaden my point of view though.

Actually before this gets any worse, let me list it out:
Straight: attracted to the opposite gender/one that is not yours
Gay: attracted to same gender
Bi: attracted to two genders
Poly: attracted to multiple (but not necessarily all) genders
Pan: attracted to all genders
A: lack of

Identities include:
Cis (identity and bits align)
Trans (they don't align)
Demi boy/girl: not exactly either of those but you mostly identfy or use those pronouns
A: lack of gender
Fluid: fluctuate between genders

And there's arguments on wether or not you're gay if you're, let's say, dating a trans guy and you say you're straight, but that's up to interpretation (mostly just don't be an asshole about it)
