What casting drama?

Just moments ago, at their D23 Live-Action Films presentation, Disney officially announced the cast of Guy Ritchie's Aladdin. Mena Massoud will play the highly-coveted title role while Naomi Scott will portray his lady love Jasmine. 2x Academy Award-nominee Will Smith has also been confirmed as the Genie, taking over the role from the late Robin Williams, who voiced the character in the original 1992 classic.

Massoud is set to star alongside John Krasinski in Amazon's upcoming Jack Ryan series while Naomi Scott is coming in hot after starring as Kimberly Hart, the Pink Ranger, in Lionsgate's recent Power Rangers reboot.

Production is expected to begin soon with Ritchie in the director's chair with a script from John August (Big Fish).

When he hears who is playing the Genie, he'll wipe his tears and be like "Oh, okay. It's not gonna be good."

So I guess we'll have Will Smith rapping "never had a friend like me"? Interesting.

@BlackBeltJones - my only issue with Will playing the Genie is i fear its gonna be Will Smith doing Will Smith instead of taking it seriously and committing to the role. dont get me wrong, its IMPOSSIBLE to fill Robin Williams shoes, but on the same note i dont want him to just phone it in like Suicide Squad

@spiderman620 - you know it's gonna be Will being Will

@spiderman620 - I don't think the Genie is a role you need to "commit" to. He's a charismatic character, they got a charismatic actor.

@spiderman620 - The Genie isn't that serious of a role. He's just a fun guy.

@spiderman620 - Granted the Genie was Robin Williams doing Robin Williams, he just did such a great job

@EnnisFan - Lol, exactly this. Robin was literally being Robin. I don't see will being will as a bad thing. At least they won't try and mimick Robin's genie.
