Cruella is shaping up to be one of Disney's most intriguing live-action adaptations to come our way in a very long time, and the studio has now confirmed that it will be released in theaters and on Disney+'s "Premier Access" service on May 28th.
With that news come a new trailer and poster, and this latest look at the movie sheds a little more light on how the 101 Dalmatians villain's origin story will play out.
As you'll see, Emma Thompson is set to serve as Cruella's foe and the movie's antagonist, and it looks a lot like that rivalry will end up pushing the titular character over the edge into madness.
"Academy Award winner Emma Stone (La La Land) stars in Disney’s 'Cruella,' an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil," reads the official synopsis.
"'Cruella,' which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson (Sense & Sensibility). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella."
This looks like it should be a fun ride, and there could be franchise potential here depending on how the story wraps up. This Cruella is much younger than the one we met in Disney's animated classic, so there could be more places for her story to go before she started killing innocent puppies!
