Based on David Petersen’s Eisner winning comics,
Mouse Guard is set in a human-free, medieval world and follows the “Mouse Guard,” a group of warrior mice tasked with protecting their brethren from predators and other threats.
Maze Runner director Wes Ball was gearing up to helm the film. while Idris Elba, Andy Serkis, Jack Whitehall and Sonoya Mizuno were attached to star in the adaptation scripted by Gary Whitta (
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story)
Mouse Guard was one of several projects greenlit before the Disney acquisition. While reasons for the sudden cancellation remain unclear, one source indicated that the production, which was to use motion capture and heavy digital effects to bring the animals to life, veered too close to Disney's homegrown CGI-made films such as
The Lion King.
As disappointing as this is, there’s still hope for the movie. According to sources, producers Matt Reeves, Ross Ritchie and Steven Christie have been allowed to shop the project to other studios. Apparently, several are already interested. One possible home could be Netflix, where Reeves has a
production deal. Paramount is another possible contender.
