Disney Shuts Down MOUSE GUARD Two Weeks Before The Start Of Principal Photography

Based on David Petersen’s Eisner winning comics, Mouse Guard is set in a human-free, medieval world and follows the “Mouse Guard,” a group of warrior mice tasked with protecting their brethren from predators and other threats.

Maze Runner director Wes Ball was gearing up to helm the film. while Idris Elba, Andy Serkis, Jack Whitehall and Sonoya Mizuno were attached to star in the adaptation scripted by Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story)

Mouse Guard was one of several projects greenlit before the Disney acquisition. While reasons for the sudden cancellation remain unclear, one source indicated that the production, which was to use motion capture and heavy digital effects to bring the animals to life, veered too close to Disney's homegrown CGI-made films such as The Lion King.

As disappointing as this is, there’s still hope for the movie. According to sources, producers Matt Reeves, Ross Ritchie and Steven Christie have been allowed to shop the project to other studios. Apparently, several are already interested. One possible home could be Netflix, where Reeves has a production deal. Paramount is another possible contender.

"veered too close to Disney's homegrown CGI-made films such as The Lion King."

" have been allowed to shop the project to other studios."

Uh...illogical and hypocritical business decisions are illogical and hypocritical.

Was this related to Redwall or something?

@d3m01iti0n - That was my first thought as well but it's not. At least, so far as I can tell without looking anything up. I had, at one point, read all the Redwall books (and was, obviously, a big fan) but this is new to me. This definitely seems to be a similar concept though done by a different author.

What is the whole point of buying a studio when you cancel everything. Disney should have just bought the rights to the Marvel characters.

@MexCowboyNation - For a hundred years worth of content, not so they can pump their own money into every doomed project Fox had on the books.

Well that has huge flop written all over it, not the tiniest bit surprised they are canceling that money pit.

This would have been an incredible animated movie if it captured the essence of the books. Performance capture though? Not necessary and would probably limit all the fantastical elements they could do with it.

"veered too close to Disney's homegrown CGI-made films such as The Lion King." This has to be the most stupid reason to cancel a movie. BUT this being performance capture was a terrible idea in the first place, this should be a straight up animated movie, even if it's realistically animated like Lion King, it needs the freedom to go crazy with movements and actions.

Mouse Guard is too good for Disney anyway. They'd prune everything good about it.

Never read Mouse Guard, cuz I don’t read comics. But I did read Redwall when I was younger which is basically the same thing and really enjoyed it.
