Former THUNDERBOLTS Star Ayo Edebiri Reportedly Being Eyed To Lead New PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Movie

Disney is believed to be developing two separate Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and a new rumor is claiming that former Thunderbolts actress Ayo Edebiri is being courted to star in one of 'em...

Back in 2020, we got word that Disney was planning two separate Pirates of the Caribbean reboots, neither of which would have any connection to the original franchise starring Johnny Depp, Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom.

Updates have been few and far between since, but according to insider Daniel Richtman, both projects are still in development.

Margot Robbie is still said to be attached to play the lead in a new female-fronted Pirates spin-off from Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson, but it sounds like the movie from Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and previous Pirates films writer Ted Elliot is a little further along, and may have a star in mind. Richtman is reporting that The Bear breakout Ayo Edebiri is being eyed to play a character named "Anne."

This project was originally developed with the main pirate from the Disneyland ride, Redd, in mind, and Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan was said to be in line to play the character. However, it seems plans have since pivoted to a Black female lead, with the focus on "a younger cast of pirates looking for a hidden treasure."

There have been rumors that at least one of these projects could "leave the door open" for the return of Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, but nothing concrete, and specific plot details on both movie remain hidden beneath the waves in Davey Jones' Locker.

Would any studio take a chance on Depp following the recent domestic violence accusations made against the actor? He certainly has his share of supporters out there, so you never know.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was a massive money-spinner for Disney, so it's hardly surprising that the studio would want to revisit the property, and Edebiri is fast becoming one of Hollywood's most in-demand young actors, so we can certainly see her being courted to lead this revival.

The Bottoms star was set to appear in a supporting role in Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts, but dropped out of the movie due to a (reported) scheduling conflict.

Would you have any interest in a new POTC movie? Drop us a comment down below.

"Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) arrives at Port Royal in the Caribbean without a ship or crew. His timing is inopportune, however, because later that evening the town is besieged by a pirate ship. The pirates kidnap the governor's daughter, Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), who's in possession of a valuable coin that is linked to a curse that has transformed the pirates into the undead. A gallant blacksmith (Orlando Bloom) in love with Elizabeth allies with Sparrow in pursuit of the pirates."

She's cool but...

Guess the Margot ship sailed. Which I wasn't a fan of that either.

@GhostDog - I was interested when Karen Gillan was rumored to be the lead as “Redd” from the actual ride…

@TheVisionary25 - Just to say Redd was at least in part based on a real life Pirate by the name of Anne Bonny just the real life version was never lined up to be auctioned off, her father was a wealthy trader and plantation owner and Ann was considered a "good catch" but may have had a fiery temper who supposedly stabbed a servant girl with a knife before marrying a poor sailor and small-time pirate named James Bonny which resulted in her being disowned then later left her husband for her lover Calico Jack.

If they are actualy going to go there and center the film around Redd I would prefer she remained an Irish redhead and ditch the questionable alterations regarding being a slave at first or at least ALSO have a redhead Irish female pirate closer to the real life Anne Bonny. Having a major character who is female and black when there were black pirates then (still is) and at least 40 female pirates at the time and this is 'of the caribean' isn't a problem at all however just question moving the fictional character further away from who she was inspired by if not also introducing a new fictional one who is closer to her.

I like her but idk…

These have been in development for so long that it’s a strong possibility that none of these proposed “reboots” might happen.

However , I am glad they are taking their time atleast to find the right approach in their eyes it seems.

@VamP5659 - Already been reported on here but RTD was saying before the specials started airing he wanted a new companion every season which isn't uncommon for Doctor Who, in fact more common than three season ones which are few and far between (only been two for new who that had three seasons, twice as many only one season).

I wouldn't mind a "Goonies-like" adventure movie where there's a group of people searching for "Captain Jack's treasure" (or some other relic from the previous movies) that crosses over with some of the more mystical elements of the original films.
