The cast of Jon Favreau's The Lion King is starting to round out, and there has been another addition today. Hot on the heels of the news that Chiwetel Ejiofor is in talks to provide the voice of Scar, The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Alfre Woodard will also be joining the picture as Sarabi, Simba's mother.

Woodard joins, Donald Glover (Simba), James Earl Jones, (Mufasa), Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), Billy Eichner (Timon), John Oliver (Zazu) and Ejifor, who THR also confirms is now a lock.

The Lion King is being written by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' scribe, Jeff Nathanson, with Favreau on board as producer along with Jeffery Silver.

The film is currently shooting in L.A, and is slated to be released in theaters on July 19, 2019.

UPDATE:: The Wrap reports that Captain America: Civil War actor John Kani will provide the voice for Rafiki the wise old mandrill.

@Dedpool - I don't know, personally I'd like to see them go with someone a bit more known.
Maybe someone like Janelle Monae?

I'm still a bit weirded out by their decision to bring back one single actor from the original. I feel they should have gone with a completely new cast, even if it's James Earl Jones we're talking about. He's a legend, but he'd be more than twice the age of their choice for Scar, that just doesn't feel right to me.

@Kyos - His voice has also aged significantly judging by Rogue One. At least Jeremy Irons still sounds relatively the same.

@TheAmarilloBlack - Sorry. I love his performance in the original, but as @Himura said his voice isn't quite as powerful as it used to be. And especially Mufasa just needs to be this all around strong, steadfast and fierce presence.

I hope I'm wrong, and his performance will win me over once more. But to have a Mufasa who's 86 and a Scar who's 40... doesn't work for me on paper. If they chose not to genderswap Rafiki, why not let James Earl Jones do his voice and cast a Mufasa in his prime?
