Disney have given Maleficent a March 14, 2014 release date. Below is the press release which also confirms that this will indeed be an origin story that leads directly into the animated Sleeping Beauty..



The Walt Disney Studios has announced a U.S. release date of March 14, 2014, for Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie in the title role as Disney’s ultimate villain. The live-action film explores the origins of the evil fairy Maleficent and what led her to curse Princess Aurora in Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty. Leading a team of visionary filmmakers known for creating and transporting audiences to new and exciting worlds, Academy Award®-winning production designer Robert Stromberg (Avatar, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland and Oz The Great and Powerful) will direct with a script by Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Alice in Wonderland). Maleficent is produced by Joe Roth (Disney’s Alice in Wonderland and Oz The Great and Powerful).


Super 8 actress Elle Fanning was said to be in talks to play Aurora in the movie, but since the release makes no mention of that we can assume that's not a done deal.

this feels like a copy of what Warner has done with Snow white casting Charlize as the witch.

Now they do Maleficent with Angelina.

This isn't Wicked, people. I'd rather see Disney return to the hand-drawn animated feature films. Also, Angelina Jolie is not the best actress for this role. i'm not interested in thsi film.

@Ror Those are the comics I always pull out when people on here complain about Fairy Tales. Have you read those coimcs? I actually like them. They have a spin off series called Grimm Fairy Tales: Myths & Legends which I like even better.

I'm hope Elle Fanning being in talks to play Sleep Beauty is only a rumor. I wanted them to go for someone older.

And I think Anglenia Jolie will over shadow Elle. She's more of an unknown actress.

@AlexDeLarge Like I said, I hope it was a rumor. I really liked CherryBomb's pick for Sleeping Beauty, Amber Heard.

She's is a talented actress, so I could see her holding her own in scenes with Angelina Jolie. And it doesn't hurt she's very hot. :)

I sincerely hope they go with an older actress than Elle Fanning!
I'm sure she's terrific, it's just I think they should go with a little older.

Although Elle is sooo pretty



I just kind of always imagined a live action Aurora to be a little older, I'm just kind of hoping that this isn't completely aimed at children like Mirror, Mirror.
