Earlier today, during the U.S. Women's National Team's World Cup victory, Walt Disney Studios finally dropped the veil on one of their more eagerly awaited live-action remakes and released the official teaser trailer for Niki Caro's Mulan, which stars Yifei Liu (The Forbidden Kingdom) as the titular warrior.

In addition to Yifei Liu, the film will co-star Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) as Böri Khan, Yoson An (Ghost Bride) as Cheng Honghui, Gong Li (Curse of the Golden Flower) as Xianniang and Jet Li (Hero) as The Emperor.

Acclaimed filmmaker Niki Caro brings the epic tale of China’s legendary warrior to life in Disney’s “Mulan,” in which a fearless young woman risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known.

I know they aren’t doing the songs, are they not using Mushu either?

@newhire13 - Pretty much no. There were rumours that he's being replaced by a phoenix. Because that's infinitely more realistic than a dragon, of course.

@PeterCipher - Dragons don't breathe fire in Chinese folk legends, so Mushu could have been culturally insensitive? idk.

@PeterCipher - Traditionally, the Chinese did have effectively phoenixes, though it's usually translated Vermilion Bird. From wikipedia: "It is described as a red bird that resembles a pheasant with a five-colored plumage and is perpetually covered in flames."

And it's one of the big deal animals, along with dragons, tigers, and turtles.

I think it looks pretty damn okay. There’s some beautiful cinematography in there, but boy am I getting tired of live-action Disney remakes.

It's not a shot-for-shot remake, so it's already better than most of these shitty live-action remakes.

@tmp3 - Jungle Book, Pete's Dragon and Maleficent weren't shot-for-shot remakes. Does that make them the best of the batch?

I don't like how unlike the original it is, I like lighthearted dragons with the voice of Eddie Murphy, but I still think it looks really cool.

Oh yeah, also..

@Nebula - I also love musicals, but of the Disney remakes I've seen, it's not the musical aspect that works the best. The songs feel kind of limp and awkward.

@Spock0Clock - Worked well for Aladdin. I can't speak for the others.

@Nebula - I didn't care for Aladdin's songs, personally, but I'm glad others did.

Does this mean McDonald's will bring back its Szechuan sauce?
