As expected,
Onward has conjured its way straight to the top of the North American box office this weekend with an opening of $40 million. That's a little lower than the $45 million debut expected by many analysts, but not by much. However, this puts the movie in the same ballpark as Pixar's
The Good Dinosaur.
That movie earned $39 million during its opening weekend, and went on to gross $123 million domestically, and $332 million at the worldwide box office.
It's a little strange to see
Onward not performing better than this, especially with positive reviews (you can find ours
by clicking here), and an A- CinemaScore. It also features two big stars - Chris Pratt and Tom Holland - but it's worth noting that this is the first Pixar movie to be released in March/early Spring; the rest have arrived either over the summer or in November.
In other box office news,
The Invisible Man exceeded expectations this weekend with a $14 million haul to finish in second place, while
Sonic the Hedgehog has dropped to fourth with $8 million. As for
Birds of Prey, that now sits in eighth place during its fifth weekend of release with $2.2 million (and a current domestic total of around $82 million).
It's hard to say what sort of impact the coronavirus has had on the box office this weekend, but theaters in China, South Korea, and most of Italy have pretty much been closed down.
