THE LITTLE MERMAID Funko POP Packaging Reveals First Look At Ursula, Triton, And More

Disney (via Toonado.com) shared a brief teaser for the upcoming The Little Mermaid live-action remake during last year's D23 Expo, giving us a glimpse of Ariel (Halle Bailey) and her pal Flounder swimming around their underwater kingdom as she belts out a few bars from "Part of Your World."

Now, thanks to some leaked Funko POP packaging, we have a first look at the character designs for several supporting players.

The POPs feature Ariel in human form, Prince Eric, King Triton and the villainous Ursula. For the most part, it looks like these guys will resemble their animated counterparts in the movie.

We still don't know very much about this take on the story, but based on what we've seen so far, director Rob Marshall won't be taking too many liberties with the animated classic it's based upon.

Bailey stars alongside Jonah-Hauer King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.

The Little Mermaid will feature music from the animated classic as well as four new songs. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who previously worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns, will also compose original music for Mermaid along with Alan Menken.

The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

The movie is set to swim into theaters on May 26, 2023.

Oh so they can paint Ursula's skin white but not Ariel's?

I'm kidding. Guys? I am totally kidding.

@ObserverIO - I'm still waiting for The Little Reverse Mermaid.

@CorndogBurglar - Huh. I'm not sure how I should feel about that. Hold on let me consult "The Boss"... Nope. e have determined that no matter how nice that cartoon ass looks, it still a no-go (I could insert a "smells like fish" joke here but I'll leave that up to someone who is far more sophisticated than myself to handle).

@CorndogBurglar - Well... I mean... how could it not?... I mean... actually, now that I think about it, with a real mermaid, how could it not... Oh! Wait! I meant her breath! You thought that I meant... well you naughty naughty boy 😳.

Not to dig this whole race of Ariel thing up again, but why is Triton white if she is black? Seems like an odd choice.

I'm done with these soulless remakes from Disney, Pinocchio was the last straw. I hope Del Toro wins, just to show those idiots that you can do something different!

@bobevanz - I think all the live action remakes have been quite under whelming. Jungle Book was probably the only decent one.

Saying that, Little Mermaid is also probably coming a bit late in the game as i can imagine a few years ago the underwater stuff would have been cool. But after Avatar and Wakanda forever, i'm not expecting it be anything special.

@bobevanz - "I'm done with these soulless remakes from Disney" See, that's a sentiment we can all get behind, no matter where you are in the political spectrum.

if you're a fan of the original story or animated movie,I'm sorry that they've f*cked up what you like or love.

@marvel72 - you mean the animated movie that took some liberties with said original story? Just like how this one is doing the same?
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 1/9/2023, 8:40 AM
@marvel72 - Why? Because they made her black? What [frick]ing nonsense.

@marvel72 - I demand a Little Mermaid that is loyal to the spirit of the original story. You know, gay.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Whatever version you love,I haven't read or seen either and I probably won't be seeing this.

So yes if you are a fan, I'm sorry.

@marvel72 - and yet here you are saying they’ve [frick]ed it up without reading the tale, seeing the Disney version animated or live

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Yeah I have seen footage from the original animated movie but I haven't seen the whole movie.

@EgoEgor - Quite the virtuous assumption there.

@EgoEgor - he literally didn't even bring up race here. He's basically reiterating what you said earlier, that disney is becoming known for their live action remakes that suck.
TUD
TUD - 1/9/2023, 11:22 AM
@marvel72 - SO you haven't seen the movie, but you somehow know they've messed it up? Because the lead is black now, apparently. Could you at least try to disguise your racism next time?

Meh. Little Mermaid has its audience I guess

There’s nothing to be said about the race issue that hasn’t already been said.

Anyway, after the abysmal reception to Pinocchio, I do wonder how much steam these remakes have left in them.

Still waiting for a live action adaptation to actually improve something. Ive never come close to thinking, "Well that was actually much better! Im glad they did this."

Nope. At best I'm like, "Hey, that wasnt bad! I mean the original is still vastly superior but, i enjoyed that."

I need one of this to actually advance these tales or else... whats the poi.... oh right, money.
