DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Alternate Ending Revealed (And It Sounds Way Better)

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron has revealed an alternate ending for the Marvel Studios sequel that would have seen a sinister Variant make his presence felt in the MCU.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a fun ride, but perhaps not the bonkers trip through multiple realities many fans hoped for. It's no secret that Sam Raimi's sequel underwent extensive reshoots, leading to sweeping changes that probably mean there's a very different cut of the movie somewhere in Marvel Studios.

We're not talking about a "#ReleaseTheRaimiCut" situation here because additional photography is something the studio frequently uses to reshape blockbusters that aren't quite working.

In the case of the Doctor Strange sequel, we know the movie's opening and The Illuminati's roster changed, but in the Director's Commentary on Disney+, writer Michael Waldron revealed an alternate ending. It doesn't sound like it was actually shot, though it may have been a little better than the one we got (which many fans believe felt rushed and tacked on).

"Strange gets trapped in that [incursion] universe," he explains, "and then [Sinister Strange] turns around, and the third eye opens." Waldron added that to punctuate this moment, we'd have heard the laugh of Vincent Price, similar to the horror icon's narration on Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

We're guessing this cliffhanger ending was scrapped because it might have been deemed a little too similar to Loki being trapped in another reality, but it's certainly intriguing to think what an evil Strange being in the MCU might have led to down the line. However, we almost certainly wouldn't have seen Clea unless she'd rescued the hero from that alternate Earth.

At one point, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was supposed to be released before Spider-Man: No Way Home. With so many fans questioning the former Sorcerer Supreme's reckless (and borderline villainous) actions in that threequel, perhaps it could have been explained by him not being the MCU's Stephen Strange?

Sound off with your thoughts on this alternate ending down in the comments section.

The last scene and post credit don't match well together, in one moment he is screaming in the middle of the street and in the next he's completely fine. Don't know how that passed in the editing.

@Urubrodi - It was just gas. It passed in the moment.

@Urubrodi - Also, in the last scene of the movie the eye is practical, and then is CGi (and bad CGi).

Honestly I prefer the ending we got, with him seemingly having a happy ending then getting his third eye. It's simple but effective. Only issue is the post credit scene, but something like that would've probably been here as well anyway.

This does sound better. Or the post shouldn’t undercut the final Raimi-esuqe ending with Strange seeming to have adjusted to the eye. Maybe it could’ve just been Clea alone in the dark dimension dealing with the beginning fallout as a result of Strange’s choices.

Yeah, this would have been a weird exit. Plus at the ending and then the post-credit scene with that eye many people questioned what was that about in the theatres. Also, the third eye wasn't fully explained as it should've been in the movie. In the comics, it's apparently a good thing to have that 3rd eye but in the movie, it's implied to be a bad thing. But I read this article about the third eye and its meaning. Wish it was explained in the movie as this article did. Perhaps, this will clarify things for people...https://screenrant.com/why-doctor-strange-has-a-3rd-eye/

Eh, this one isn't any better. Plus, couldn't Chavez just save him if he gets trapped?

The movie wasn’t good.
Wanda is now an irredeemable villain who has killed tons of people, in other universes while trying to capture Chavez, at Kamartage, etc.

There is no redemption arc for her in the movie.

All they had to do was have her use of the dark hold conjure Nightmare and he possesses or brainwashes her.
Then she teams with Strange to beat him and redeem herself.

It’s that simple but Waldron (the writer) apparently didn’t read the comic books for any inspiration.

And how is the MCU Earth-616?
That is the comic book universe. This is earth-199999

By making it 616 you are saying that everything that happened on 616 in the comics has happened and will happen here.
