DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Has Already Passed The $500M Mark Worldwide

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness got off to a great start at the domestic box office, and the MCU sequel is faring just as well overseas, having now passed the $500 million mark worldwide!

By MarkCassidy - May 11, 2022 11:05 AM EST

Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is already halfway towards hitting the $1 billion milestone after less than a full week on general release.

The MCU sequel had a strong opening weekend in North America, passing the $200M mark domestically on Tuesday. Now, the latest box office updates are in, and the (former) Sorcerer Supreme's second solo outing has conjured-up a magical $500M worldwide.

Though Marvel Studios movies generally perform very well, In The Multiverse of Madness received relatively so-so reviews (it currently sits at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes) and was given one of the lowest CinemaScores of any MCU release. This clearly hasn't deterred audiences from showing up in droves, but it will be interesting to see if Doctor Strange 2 can maintain this momentum moving forward.

In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stühlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. The film is directed by Sam Raimi, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Michael Waldron.

New #DoctorStrange shd break $550M tomm, aiming for $700M+ thru SUN & $850M+ thru 3rd wknd.

Considering that weekend Top Gun 2 comes out, that is the moment this movie goes full Profesor X, so it will end up around $900M/950M...as expected.
Which are impresive numbers, making it the second biggest movie of the new era.

Glad to see having strong numbers overseas despite no China, Russia, or half the Middle East.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Russia doesn’t have much impact on box office as people think

@PantherKing - It kinda does, big [frick]ing country.
Dont know how fond of the genre they are, though.
PantherKing
PantherKing - 5/11/2022, 12:04 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Just because it’s a big country doesn’t make it a massive movie market. Go look up movie openings and you’ll see. It doesn’t come close to U.S or China in the share of the market

@PantherKing - Ok, lets see how much NWH made there...it didnt come out...neither did Endgame...the [frick], is a 144M market, why arent these movies coming out there???

@WakandanQueen - If the movie is $950M by june, I can see Disney keeping it on theathers a few more weeks just to reach that milestone...but they need to start promoting Thor 4 by then.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I don’t believe, and time will tell if I’m right or wrong, that top gun two will take as much money from Multiverse of madness as you think. That is to say, enough to block 1 billion
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/11/2022, 1:12 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - Is Tom Cruise, and reviews so far have been great.
But aside from that, is a new release, people now tend to watch new releases instead of watching the same movie for a second or a third time.

Jurassic World 3 is also chopping Top Gun 2's wings when it comes out, too.
And then Thor 4 will be the second ice age for Jurassic World 3.

(I'm running out of puns)

@DoubleD - Captain Marvel came out in a completely different world, those norms dont apply anymore.

One of the new "norms" is that movies have a 60% drop on their second weekend.

We are not in 2019 anymore, DD.

@DoubleD - NWH doesnt count, I think we all here agree on that.

Wanna count Marvel movies? count The Eternals, Shang Chi, Black Widow, Morbius...also, count any other movie released since march 2020, all follow the same pattern.

@DoubleD - Who is even talking about which movie made more money, I'm talking about movies not making as much movies as they used to...ALL movies, not just Marvel, you are the one obssessed with Marvel.

Movies now fall apart after their OW, and are basically dead the moment another big movie comes out, has been this way of 2 years.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 5/11/2022, 1:51 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I don’t think most of us say NWH doesn’t count. A lot of us know the MCU makes billion and 2 billion box office movies. And ones that make less than a billion. When an MCU movie may possibly make a billion, as this one may versus say the first weeken number of black widow through Eternals, then we don’t bet against marvel. I can see why you would take that position tho, since only NWH crossed (obliterated) that line.

I’d wager Strange 2 will take further steps towards dispelling folks of the notion that the MCU is as amenable to the laws of box office post coronavirus as other movies.

We can exchange PayPals. $10 says strange 2 passes a billion.

But anyway, yeah I think the MCU at the very least is back to normal.
DoubleD
DoubleD - 5/11/2022, 1:52 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Pandemic is over. Listen to your advice it's NOT 2021 it's 2022 everything has changed and back to normal and fully open.

Movie theaters are packed and selling out in 2022. No one is wearing masks.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/11/2022, 2:05 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - NWH was an anomaly, a cinematic event that gathered 3 generations of comic book fans.
It was (imo) a bigger event than even Endgame.

90% of MCU movies pulled $1B with ease, an event movie like MoM would've pulle $2B if released in 2019.

I'm not willing to bet money, but how about this, winner gets to choose the avatar the loser has to use for an entire week?
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/11/2022, 2:06 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - (btw, end of the line for MoM having to make $1B is june 1st)

Endgame made $44M in Russia and No Way Home made $55M.

As others have suggested it's not a huge territory to lose big picture wise. Losing China is much more significant but considering the % the studios actually get to keep it too is less impactfull.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/11/2022, 2:07 PM
@DoubleD - It not just the pandemic, people just changed the way they aproach movie.
That is why, if you havent notice, I dont say "pandemic era" anymore, but "new era".
Same reason why I think The Flash is gonna bomb, Black Adam and Aquaman 2 are not making what the studio think they are making, and Avatar 2 will be a BO dissapointment (although it will easily break the $1B mark).
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/11/2022, 2:09 PM
@LongMayHeReign - Russia is not present in Box Office Mojo, for some weird reason.

Anyway, why not pay attention to a 144M market?
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 5/11/2022, 2:09 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Also Top Gun 2 does not target the same audience as MoM so lets stop pretending like it's going to completely render MoM's 4th and 5th weekends completely useless.
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 5/11/2022, 2:12 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Where are you getting $144M from?
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 5/11/2022, 2:15 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - it is the streaming age but 2 of those 3 movies have outside factors to contend with. BA is superhero Rock so idk jury’s still out. MCU may be lumped in with all other movies but the difference you and I have is we think of “playing it safe” completely backwards: you say all movies, I say all but MCU. People break their necks to go watch em. From NWH forward is sequel land. We wanna see what’s up with our favorite characters
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/11/2022, 2:41 PM
@LongMayHeReign - 144 million people live there, according to Google

@TheWalkingCuban - So, you are willing to bet or not? you say $1B by june 1st.
PantherKing
PantherKing - 5/11/2022, 3:53 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Gee maybe it has something to do with Russia’s failed invasion of Ukraine
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/11/2022, 3:58 PM
@PantherKing - Endgame and NWH came out there before that.
