ETERNALS' Audience Rating Hits Rotten Tomatoes, And It's A LOT Higher Than The Critics Score

With Marvel's Eternals now playing in theaters, the movie's audience score has been added to Rotten Tomatoes, and, as expected, it's quite a bit higher than the critics' rating. Take a look...

Eternals is now on general release following last night's preview screenings, which means the audience rating has opened up on Rotten Tomatoes. We figured fans would be far more responsive to Chloe Zhao's superhero epic than the majority of critics, and that certainly appears to be the case.

With over 500 verified verdicts counted, Eternals currently boasts an audience score of 86%, which is in stark contrast to the 51% of critics who gave the movie a "Fresh" rating.

This could fluctuate as more people see the film over the weekend, of course, but it now seems highly unlikely that the critics score will raise much higher, so it's looking like Eternals will indeed become Marvel Studios' first "Rotten" movie on the review aggregator. If the film does well at the box office - which it is expected to - we can't see the studio caring too much, but it is more than a little surprising all the same.

Marvel Studios’ Eternals follows a group of heroes from beyond the stars who had protected the Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.

The outstanding ensemble cast includes Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, with Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena.

I saw the Eternals last night and it was EXTREMELY AWESOME! I thought it was a great story and the ending was EPIC. Cinematography alone was worth a viewing. 4 Stars out of 5 Stars.

@SauronthePower - Eternals feels like binge watching a season of a Netflix show. If you like the part in Avengers where they go around recruiting people, little character moments, you'll like Eternals.

@Matador - There is a character who is a 7000 year old woman trapped in the body of a child. Similar kind of identity crisis I guess

@Waddles - Thanks,I've seen Black Widow and thought it was OK. I will watch Shang-Chi when it arrives on Disney Plus.

Its worrying that I thought Black Widow was OK but scored better than Eternals.

I find it funny how critics complain about the ‘Marvel formula’ and then Marvel does something (that actually looks to be) very different and we get this response.

Maybe the movie is legitimately bad (even if my friends enjoyed it), so I cant wait to watch this in the cinema to find out for myself!

My kingdom for people to finally learn how Rotten Tomatoes works and what elements of it are worthwhile and/or worthless

On a serious note, I do think ETERNALS is going to force some people to have some actual discussion about how RT is supposed to be used. It's obviously not going anywhere, so if people are going to talk about it it would be cool if we all understood it correctly

@OmegaDaGrodd - RT is like the oil industry.. gas prices go up and down whenever someone wants them to at the corporate level.

let me tell you, people (as in, the regular moviegoing audicence, not just us cbm enthusiasts) are going to EAT THIS MOVIE UP. and I will tell you why: the RT score won't matter, the lenght won't matter, the obscurity of the characters won't matter, they will go see this because people will connect with these guys and maybe even their story. all of these guys are instantly relatable, compelling, flawed and interesting, you feel for them, you like them, you might even ship a couple of them, and THAT is going to move some butts into the theatres.

Comparing the audience score to the critics score is like comparing The People’s Choice Awards to the Oscars.

Two completely different and unrelated things.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 11/5/2021, 8:49 AM
@TopBoy - and the conversation in recent times has been about if maybe the Oscars, or rather the people who decide those awards, have become too archaic and don't reflect the current climate of Hollywood and its connection with the people who actually go see the movies.

@TopBoy - You mean the Oscars that nowadays only really nominates movies that barely anyone watches, and once a movie is nominated the studio executives and the actors of the movie have to cater to and buy gifts for members of the Academy just to essentially buy their votes for the awards?

The Oscars was a terrible analogy for RT.

"Comparing the audience score to the critics score is like comparing The People’s Choice Awards to The Critics' Choice Movie Awards"

There, I fixed it for you 😏

My theater was close to sold out at the 6:10 showing. I had strangers sitting next to me and no masks at all in the theater. Great to see.
