Eternals director Chloé Zhao recently spoke to Fandango about her highly anticipated Marvel Studios movie and dropped some big hints about what fans can expect from this game-changing adventure.
When it was put to the filmmaker that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has promised Eternals will redefine the Marvel Cinematic Universe (find those comments right here), she also hinted that this movie won't be one to miss. "I think a big part of it is that audiences will be discovering the origin of the MCU through the mythology of the Celestials," Zhao teased.
"I think by the end of the film, we will have a new understanding of planet Earth’s relationship with the cosmos, and also with her own inhabitants," the Oscar-winner continued. "But in that sense, it would have a huge effect on the future of the MCU."
Zhao went on to explain that the population returning in Avengers: Endgame is explored as "this huge ecological implication [if] something like that happened to our planet." As a result, it's both that and "the sudden mysterious return of the Deviants" which means "it's time for the Eternals to get back to work." The director was quick to add that Eternals is a standalone movie, but "what happens in this film will have huge implications on the future."
With that in mind, Zhao wants to make sure that fans wait through the credits for not one, but two stingers. "Don’t just stay for the first one — also stay for the second one, too," she said. "They are equally as important in weight, and both have big surprises for you."
So, unlike many previous Marvel Studios movies, it sounds like we won't be getting one important scene and one that's basically just a joke. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings had two meaningful post-credits scenes, of course, and it's good to know that Eternals promises to do the same.
Eternals is set to be released in theaters on November 5.
