Hard as it may be to believe, Marvel Studios has never released a movie that's dropped below 60% on Rotten Tomatoes... until now.
Chloe Zhao's Eternals has been gradually dipping since the embargo lifted earlier this week, and with 116 reviews counted, the latest Phase 4 adventure now sits at 59%, making it the first MCU release to drop to "rotten" status on the aggregator.
The critics consensus reads: "An ambitious superhero epic that soars slightly more often than it strains, Eternals takes the MCU in intriguing -- and occasionally confounding -- new directions."
This means quite a few critics genuinely believe that the likes of Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor: The Dark World, Ant-Man and The Wasp, and - yes, we're lumping it in here - Black Widow are better than Eternals. Opinions are subjective, of course, but having seen the movie, we can tell you that it is much better than this score suggests.
Why Eternals failed to strike a chord with critics is hard to say, but it shouldn't have too much of an impact on its performance at the box office when the movie hits theaters on November 5.
Marvel Studios’ Eternals follows a group of heroes from beyond the stars who had protected the Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.
The outstanding ensemble cast includes Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, with Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena.
