ETERNALS Sequel Reportedly In Development With Chloé Zhao Returning To Direct

Though there's been no official announcement from Marvel Studios, Eternals actor Patton Oswalt (Pip the Troll) has seemingly confirmed that a sequel is in the works with director Chloé Zhao set to return.

Somewhat surprisingly, It sounds like a sequel to Marvel's Eternals may be in the works.

Though there's been no official announcement from the studio, actor Patton Oswalt, who played Pip the Troll in the movie's post-credits scene, seemingly let slip that another movie is in-development. "They have announced there's going to be an Eternals sequel, Chloe Zhao is going to direct it. So hopefully there will be more adventures of Starfox and Pip," Oswalt told Al Rocker while being interviewed for The Today Show.

MCU sequels are a regular occurrence, of course, but Eternals is the only Marvel Studios movie to drop to "rotten" status on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and the divisive superhero epic was landed with another rather dubious distinction when it finished up its domestic run with a disappointing $164.9 million.

This gave Eternals the lowest domestic haul of any MCU-set movie aside from 2008's The Incredible Hulk ($134M), and even though the movie performed much better overseas (its global cume passed $400 million mark), it was generally assumed that its BO performance and critical reception would influence Disney's decision when it came to potentially fast-tracking a follow-up.

That said, we were always likely to see these characters again at some point, and unless Oswalt is way off course here, the immortal heroes will reassemble on the big screen down the line.

What do you guys make of this? Would you like to see an Eternals sequel? You ca check out our review of the movie here.

The definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

@TyrantBossMedia - Yeah. Marvel throwing another $200 million + at the same director responsible for their worst reviewed movie in franchise history and one of the lowest returns on investment they've ever had?

Doesn't make much sense to me, but we'll see.

@TyrantBossMedia - Think they'll learn from what didnt work. Think this will be in space, think you'll see more known characters pop up and it wont release coming out of a pandemic.

Now if this one is badly reviewed and doesnt do more than 400 mill its a wrap but would bet thats not the case.

@Chris827 - That’s quite an expensive “wait and see”.

@TyrantBossMedia -If true, I have a feeling it's a case of the surviving talent having their contracts tied to Zhao.

Kind of agree with @Chris827 in that lessons will be learnt. The delay plus post pandemic release didnt help either. Shang Chi fared a little better with about 30mill more in box office, but that came out during a holiday weekend at the end of summer.

Eternals changed up the usual marvel formula (not greatly) in trying something a bit different, so I think they'll try that a bit more but with Feige probably having greater involvement. I would prefer a follow up to this than another Taika entry tbh.

Even though it was the least liked critically, I personally think there's been worse marvel entries...Thor 2 and 4, Captain Marvel and Dr strange 2.

Some bad vfx aside and the lackluster villain I just feel Eternals will age better than some other entries aswell.

Just my opinion.

@TyrantBossMedia - indeed, maybe they want to explain why no one has mentioned the gigantic head and hand coming out of the planet or the "god" in the sky.

I guess they have their plans? I'm still waiting to see some indication of what that is but hiring Zhao again seems crazy

@TyrantBossMedia - Yeah but with the current state of Marvel.... Thats a woman director with a large woman lead cast so they are gonna throw all kinds of money at it and blame the consumer when it does bad.

@ScaryTerry - considering they are bringing back the person who made the first, who knows it could improve on what didnt work but wouldnt hold out hope for something great

have a feeling this will be like the difference between thor and thor the dark world

@MCUKnight11 - a great script twist would be for Ajak to awaken with Ikkaris’ blind loyalty mindset (Arishem mind wipe) and Ikkaris assuming the mantle of questioning the hierarchy of leadership. This kind of reversal practically writes itself and could be a very intriguing path for these characters.

@SauronthePower - Same personality, some kind of robotic dna that doesn't change to much(with 10+ characters it might not be a good idea). But new morals and agendas like you say sound like a great idea!

We been knew on this. Ironically despite not liking most of Phase 4, I actually think the first Eternals is underrated. It’s not amazing but worst film in Phase4? Nah, that’s gotta go to Black Widow.
