ETERNALS Star Gemma Chan Confirms She Will Return To The Marvel Cinematic Universe As Sersi

Eternals star Gemma Chan has confirmed that she will reprise the role of Sersi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while also weighing in on donning the hero's costume and her God-like powers. Check it out.

Released at a time when theaters were still struggling due to the pandemic, Eternals managed to overcome mixed reviews to earn an admirable $401.8 million worldwide. That was without ever seeing the light of day in China, but with a $200 million budget, it wasn't Marvel Studios' most profitable title.

This could explain why we've heard nothing about a sequel, though it's equally as likely Kevin Feige and company are just waiting for the right time before revealing where we'll see these characters next. Eternals ended with quite the cliffhanger, anyway, so we're keen to see what happens next in this corner of the MCU (the stage has been set for a huge clash with the Celestial, Arishem).

Recently, W Magazine caught up with Eternals star Gemma Chan and asked whether she'll play Sersi again. "Yes," she confirmed, adding: "Marvel owns us for life. [Laughs]"

Elsewhere in the same interview, Chan talked about previously playing a dominatrix in Secret Diary of a Call Girl and whether wearing latex prepared her for this superhero role (yes, it's a terrible question, but we weren't the ones asking!). "The latex was comfortable!" she said. "My costume in the Marvel Universe was much more confining. But still far easier than my first time in the Marvel Universe, when I was famously painted blue in Captain Marvel."

As for whether she enjoyed playing a "God," Chan responded, "It was interesting. In Eternals, she starts out shy and then discovers her power as a leader. That was fun."

There's still a lot more story to tell with Sersi, and we're hoping we find out what happens next sooner rather than later. The Eternals are likely to be a pivotal part of the MCU moving forward, whether that's in a direct sequel to this first film or in other upcoming movies and TV shows.

@SauronthePower - well I have a weird scale of 7 stars.

1 completely stupid (Catwoman, Jonah hex, etc)
2 a few good things but still terrible (venom 2, cap marvel
3 a few more but still boring (Black Widow)
4 entertaining (TSS, Antman)
5 good (Wonder Woman)
6 really good (IM, Ragnarok, black Panther)
7 best (spiderverse, IW, EG, TDK, NWH, DOFP, X2)

@GirshwinDavies - Iron Man is a perfect comic book movie but let’s face it we are spoiled and I am like don’t give me an introduction, give me an ensemble LOL

@tylerzero - captain marvel was the best solo debut film in the mcu other than maybe doctor strange. Other than a couple bad songs played in it, most have no complaints

I’m sure we’ll see the Eternals again, I’d suspect that’s why Marvel chose to introduce them.

@Spike101 - rough year tho. Both Sony movies made more. Yes Eternals topped widow worldwide but not domestically which made less than TIH adjusted for inflation, and of course the reviews. Widow is out so if there’s gonna be a sacrificial lamb…

But it is the MCU. They some confident mugs

Let's hope they make her more engaging next time. I only watched it once, but I just remember her mostly just standing there for a lot of the plot, having a bland romance with Ikaris and then becoming the leader because the script demands it.

The Eternals aren't that popular, they need well know heroes like The Avengers,Spidey,Thor,Guardians Of The Galaxy and Doctor Strange in their next big screen outing and then people might go and watch their movie.

@marvel72 - If the Avengers are taking a rest, then I've always thought the Defenders is the obvious next big name team. I know we're probably getting FF and X-Men but they both fill a different sort of niche.

Who wouldn't want to see a film with Doctor Strange, Hulk (actually not out of place in Defenders), Namor and Silver Surfer? Maybe add the Barbara Norriss Valkyrie, Hellcat and Nighthawk.

Then after that you bring back the Avengers for the Avengers vs Defenders war, manipulated into battling each other by Loki and Dormammu.

@marvel72 - Spider-Man is the only character out of that bunch, who was well-known before getting a movie.
