Released at a time when theaters were still struggling due to the pandemic, Eternals managed to overcome mixed reviews to earn an admirable $401.8 million worldwide. That was without ever seeing the light of day in China, but with a $200 million budget, it wasn't Marvel Studios' most profitable title.
This could explain why we've heard nothing about a sequel, though it's equally as likely Kevin Feige and company are just waiting for the right time before revealing where we'll see these characters next. Eternals ended with quite the cliffhanger, anyway, so we're keen to see what happens next in this corner of the MCU (the stage has been set for a huge clash with the Celestial, Arishem).
Recently, W Magazine caught up with Eternals star Gemma Chan and asked whether she'll play Sersi again. "Yes," she confirmed, adding: "Marvel owns us for life. [Laughs]"
Elsewhere in the same interview, Chan talked about previously playing a dominatrix in Secret Diary of a Call Girl and whether wearing latex prepared her for this superhero role (yes, it's a terrible question, but we weren't the ones asking!). "The latex was comfortable!" she said. "My costume in the Marvel Universe was much more confining. But still far easier than my first time in the Marvel Universe, when I was famously painted blue in Captain Marvel."
As for whether she enjoyed playing a "God," Chan responded, "It was interesting. In Eternals, she starts out shy and then discovers her power as a leader. That was fun."
There's still a lot more story to tell with Sersi, and we're hoping we find out what happens next sooner rather than later. The Eternals are likely to be a pivotal part of the MCU moving forward, whether that's in a direct sequel to this first film or in other upcoming movies and TV shows.
