ETERNALS Star Kumail Nanjiani Says He's Heard Nothing From Marvel Studios About Sequel Plans

Despite rumblings that Eternals 2 is moving forward at Marvel Studios, Kingo actor Kumail Nanjiani confirms he hasn't heard anything about reprising the role in a possible sequel. Read on for details...

Eternals remains Marvel Studios' only "Rotten" movie on Rotten Tomatoes, and seeing as it was released at a time when people were still reluctant to head to theaters, we don't really know how much that affected box office takings. By no means a flop and far from a hit, the franchise now appears to have been sidelined similar to what happened with The Incredible Hulk.

There have recently been rumblings about a sequel heading our way during the Multiverse Saga, while reliable scoopers are claiming Tiamut will return in a big way in Captain America: New World Order and Thunderbolts as the MCU's source of Adamantium.

Recent projects have also been rife with Kingo Easter Eggs, but actor Kumail Nanjiani confirms he's still in the dark when it comes to any possible Eternals sequel plans.

"I mean, listen, I have plans today. I don’t know if they have plans. I would love to come back," the actor says. "But I’m sort of waiting to hear when or if that’s going to happen. I’m hoping I get to do more. I had a great time playing that character. It’d be a shame if he’s a sort of one and done. But, you know, the decision’s not mine to make."

Marvel Studios enlisted an A-List cast for Eternals, so the fact they don't seem to know what the future holds in store for this franchise is a little worrying. The movie ended on a massive cliffhanger that we can't imagine will be left unresolved, but the Eternals may well end up being little more than supporting characters in a future project.

Insiders, however, claim a follow-up will happen, and it was recently reported that we should expect "Judgement Day" in the more cosmic sequel. Arishem took the Eternals who disobeyed him in order to decide whether Earth deserved to survive at the cost of the emerging Tiamut, so the stakes will clearly be extremely high in any follow-up.

While there's no news on a possible release date, it sounds like filmmaker Chloé Zhao won't be back at the helm, so Marvel Studios could be searching for a new director.

Are you hoping Eternals 2 happens?

I'm torn on Eternals, I liked the visuals and the characters. If they do make a sequel i'd want them to try and maintain as much of that Zhao style as they can.

Let down by some of the writing and decisions they made with the story but it's a movie I don't mind rewatching

@JakeyChappers - Yeah, i didn't hate it.

I think the over reliance on VFX (which was just poor at times), the weak villian and the third act kind of let it down.

When Zhao was in her element with some of the visuals and landscapes though, that shit was beautiful.

Hell of a cast to waste not doing a potential sequel with though.

@JakeyChappers - I wouldn't say it's exceptional, but I think it's very underrated. But the Deviants were really just something to be there. They were an overall pointless presence. There needed to be a better conflict before the internal conflicts arrive in the 3rd act.

They should have used The Inhumans instead of Eternals,

Hopefully they let this series die and focus on something most of the audience wants to watch.

@OrgasmicPotatoe - I doubt they will. Think the Eternals/Celestials are gonna play a big role in future MCU-lore

Doesn't really surprise me right now. Marvel Studios is already busy as it is with all the other projects. Wouldn't mind a Celestials-focused Special Presentation though

Hey, let’s give a guy here’s the muscles, and then he can be an 80’s, 90s bad ass like Sly, the Austrian Oak, the Muscles from Brussels, or Ivan Drago, or “body dysmorphia” 🤦🏽‍♂️

Here’s to a better year for marvel. Personally, I thought last year I had good movies, and it started with the previous year, Spider-Man three, or three, or four, whatever it was. Whatever your opinions are of last year’s movies, the box office topped the previous year. However, the three movies kind of emulated 2017 box office, not bad for 2 of those sequels, but significantly low for BP. Still. Critically divisive films and going back to ‘21, Eternals got that SPLAT. That Slime. ‘21 wasn’t good, ‘22 wasn’t great, ain’t Gon lie, Antman looks good

I will continue to cite Sony’s impetuous decision to release Spidey before marvel released Strange as the reason Strange didn’t quite hit the mark. That is all

@TheWalkingCuban - Last year's box office was actually pretty terrible overall. At least this means there's no way to go but up... hopefully. Got my fingers crossed for Ant-Man.

"At an estimated total of $7.5 billion, the North American box office had the third worst year since 2000, still trailing 2019 box office earnings by 33 percent. Things are looking even worse when adjusting for ticket price inflation, which makes the 2022 results the third worst year in a long, long time. With roughly 814 million tickets sold in the United States and Canada, movie theaters attracted at least 400 million fewer visitors than in any year between 1995 and 2019, according to industry tracker The Numbers."

@WarMonkey - well 2.5-3 or whatever billion didnt used to look so bad, but black panther should have pulled it past the 3 billion mark on its own, should’ve been closer to 3.5. No China still. I’d say it was good but movie quality could’ve brought it up more. WoM was too mixed last year.

Year I hope Antman slays

While I enjoyed the film, I can understand the hesitation to follow up with sequels. The pacing was a bit of a drag and as many others have said before me, the film would have worked more effectively as a series.

Let's focus on what worked: The characters and (most of) the powers. With the film as a reference point, we can see the Eternals return in other properties and know how powerful they are.

Kingo would be wonderful to make a guest appearance in Ms. Marvel. The Ms. Marvel characters are already familiar with Kingo and it would be nice to see Kamala fighting alongside another one of her heroes (an endorsement from Kingo to Kamala’s mother would probably go a long way).

Sprite could be interesting as a sort of “historian” for the Young Avengers.

Let Phastos go home to his family, but Sersi needs to return as an Avenger alongside Black Knight. Add in Sam Wilson Cap, Hercules, and Yelena Widow and give them all the leather bombers!

I really want to see Thena, Makkari and Druig return with Starfox and Pip in a post-credits GoTG 3, but nothing supports that suspicion yet (and hopefully they wouldn't feel as shoehorned in as Val and Ross in Wakanda Forever).

Ikaris, Ajak, and Gilgamesh could be resurrected by the Celestials as pawns during Secret Wars.

Short of Marvel Studios going bankrupt or something in the next year or two, they are absolutely going to return. Feige wouldn't just do them off with no explanation or payoff. If the rumors of the MCU rebooting after The Multiverse Saga are true, they'll definitely show up before the saga ends.

There's plenty of room for improvement and I understand people's problems with the movie, but I've grown to really dig it. Mid-tier MCU for me but there's a lot about Eternals that I enjoy revisiting.
