ETERNALS Star Richard Madden Says It's More Than "Just Another Superhero Movie" And Teases Ikaris' Powers

Eternals star Richard Madden (Ikaris) has shared more insight into what fans can expect from the Marvel Studios movie, revealing that "I really think we're doing something [the MCU has] not done yet."

The first trailer for Eternals certainly didn't reveal much, but there was enough in there to get fans talking about what looks like one of Marvel Studios' most unique movies yet. It's certainly hard to escape the feeling that the debut of these characters will change the MCU in a big way, and during a recent interview with GQ, star Richard Madden dropped more hints about what we can expect.

Saying that Ikaris and Gemma Chan's Sersi have "a through-the-ages love story" (which we can't help but think will be disrupted by the arrival of Kit Harington's Dane Whitman), the actor went on to confirm that reshoots and additional dialogue sessions have been taking place since shooting wrapped. "Do I still fit into that skintight superhero outfit after lockdown?" he joked.

Madden has also been getting used to what sound like some bonkers action scenes fighting "a duvet on a huge rubber ball" and cardboard cutouts of monsters held up by members of the crew. "Or lots of laser eyes, like that," he says, squinting, "[because] I’ve got laser eyes."

Getting a little more serious, he says Chloe Zhao's work has ensured that Eternals is "above just another superhero movie. It’s about, ‘OK, so how do they interact with the world now, when they’ve done everything?’ What are these people like? And what do they value and care about? What doesn’t affect them? The Marvel Universe keeps changing and elevating and growing and I really think we’re doing something that they’ve not done yet."

We're clearly in store for a fun ride with Eternals, and that second trailer really can't get here soon enough. When Marvel Studios will release some more footage remains to be seen, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is likely to be the focus for now, while we're still waiting for a first look at Spider-Man: No Way Home!

Eternals is set to be released in theaters on November 5, 2021.

Looked like another MCU film based on that trailer. How many times have we heard this for it to not be the case?

The only reason I have any anticipation for this is because of the director. I can only trust that she will try to create something special within the mold mandated by the Marvel execs.

@Fares - I agree. Interesting choice indeed.

Trailer was stunning. Hoping it’s different and Zhao seems like the type to bring that.

@BlackBeltJones - The trailer looks stunning but Nomadland was very mediocre to me and I was shocked we saw McDormand's muff :/

This trailer was delish. Really ready for a new era of MCU Films (not just phase 4) but new characters and new realms of the MCU.

I couldn't tell from the trailer what was going on or what this is going to be about like with a lot of Marvel trailers, so I'm not sure yet if I believe Madden.

That said, Madden is great so I will just watch this maybe even for him alone already. And also maybe (yeah sure, ''maybe''), because of Hayek and Jolie.

The article says filming wrapped in Jan 2021. Is that a typo?

I could tell from the trailer that this is going to be something pretty unique. With how the MCU likes to utilize genre within their films (Black Widow with the spy genre, for example), this feels like it could make for a great historical epic.

It's More Than "Just Another Superhero Movie"

You're right, Robb Stark! It's more like a parody of Jack Kirby's work.

I have no idea what to expect, but I'm really looking forward to this. The source material is interesting, and also leaves a lot of space to play around in

Look I’m in, it’s MCU and I’m deep down the rabbit hole at this point, but this is one I’m struggling to get excited for. Maybe it’s bc I don’t really know the characters but I’m curious to see what makes this one special bc I’m not really seeing it yet

@Ha1frican - there's plenty of existing material on these characters lol

@Ha1frican -
It's not a good movie as per the official plot leak. They are trying to get people interested by keeping it vague.

Personally, skipping it. It's not interesting to me.

@Ha1frican - the leaked screen test synopsis sounds truly awful. That’s my main concern. What they do with Ikaris might be the worst part.

@Scarilian - official plot leak? Reddit users claiming to have seen segments of a movie at a screening are not official. The supposed leak was out before reshoots. It’s your opinion but you just seem to be in doomsayer mode because that’s what you are.
