The first trailer for Eternals certainly didn't reveal much, but there was enough in there to get fans talking about what looks like one of Marvel Studios' most unique movies yet. It's certainly hard to escape the feeling that the debut of these characters will change the MCU in a big way, and during a recent interview with GQ, star Richard Madden dropped more hints about what we can expect.
Saying that Ikaris and Gemma Chan's Sersi have "a through-the-ages love story" (which we can't help but think will be disrupted by the arrival of Kit Harington's Dane Whitman), the actor went on to confirm that reshoots and additional dialogue sessions have been taking place since shooting wrapped. "Do I still fit into that skintight superhero outfit after lockdown?" he joked.
Madden has also been getting used to what sound like some bonkers action scenes fighting "a duvet on a huge rubber ball" and cardboard cutouts of monsters held up by members of the crew. "Or lots of laser eyes, like that," he says, squinting, "[because] I’ve got laser eyes."
Getting a little more serious, he says Chloe Zhao's work has ensured that Eternals is "above just another superhero movie. It’s about, ‘OK, so how do they interact with the world now, when they’ve done everything?’ What are these people like? And what do they value and care about? What doesn’t affect them? The Marvel Universe keeps changing and elevating and growing and I really think we’re doing something that they’ve not done yet."
We're clearly in store for a fun ride with Eternals, and that second trailer really can't get here soon enough. When Marvel Studios will release some more footage remains to be seen, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is likely to be the focus for now, while we're still waiting for a first look at Spider-Man: No Way Home!
Eternals is set to be released in theaters on November 5, 2021.
