Eternals Director Chloé Zhao Comes Out In Defense Of Superhero Films: "It's Important Not To Write [Them] Off"

Eternals director Chloé Zhao has come out in defense of superhero and comic book movies, explaining why she feels it's important not to write them off...

The popularity of superhero and comic book-based movies has undeniably waned over the past few years, with many - including legendary filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola - putting this supposed "fatigue" down to the overall disposability of the genre.

One renowned filmmaker who doesn't see it quite that way is Eternals director Chloé Zhao, who boarded the Marvel Studios epic after helming 2020's Oscar-winning Nomadland.

During a masterclass about her career at the Venice Film Festival on Friday, Zhao reflected on her experience working on Eternals, which proved to be a critical (it was Marvel's first "Rotten" movie on Rotten Tomatoes) and commercial disappointment.

"I loved doing it,” she said of directing Eternals. “For any of you who love anime, I know you know this was a girl’s dream come true. Comic books are the western equivalent of [manga]. They are very different, but I live in the west, and that’s what I had access to.”

Zhao was also asked about the recent backlash to the genre, particularly Scorsese's "them park rides" comparison.

“I do feel it’s important to not write off stories because we don’t consider them high art,” she said. “The purpose of storytelling for me, humbly, is to create containers for people … to try to process what they need to process. Archetypes are such a great way to do it — and we see them in myths — is because it’s something we all share.”.

Zhao has previously said that she was proud of how Eternals turned out, but when asked about the movie's reception, the filmmaker admitted that the project simply wasn't that high a priority for Marvel, possibly suggesting that not quite enough time and effort was put in to make the film the best it could be.

“Eternals was not high on their priority list,” she explained. “Because it’s a quite unique IP and it [was] only on their list of potential players. You know, with Marvel, it’s very much a thing to find the right filmmaker before they say, ‘That’s the IP we’re gonna go for.’”

Zhao also noted that Kevin Feige saw how passionate she was about the property, trusting her to make a film that “literally no one in the world was interested in."

In another recent interview, revealed that she was in contention to helm a different MCU movie before landing Eternals.

"I went in at first for Black Widow, and then there was a scheduling conflict. And then when Nate Moore, my producer for Eternals, showed me the treatment, I went, 'Oh, wow, I get to have all these immortals, like a Greek play, to discuss humanity. And then I get to create monsters and space gods, right?' It probably should have scared me. I don’t know. I tend to jump before I know how to swim"

We've heard conflicting reports about an Eternals sequel over the years, but at this stage, another movie revolving around the team of immortal androids is looking less and less likely.

Tiamut did appear in Captain America: Brave New World, but the gigantic Celestial was only used as a plot device to introduce Adamantium to the MCU. It's difficult to imagine Marvel completely disregarding everything else associated with Eternals, but at the same time, we're not sure which planned big or small-screen projects make sense to facilitate their return.

Would you like to see the Eternals back in the MCU? Let us know in the comments section down below.

Marvel Studios’ Eternals follows a group of heroes from beyond the stars who had protected the Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.

The outstanding ensemble cast includes Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, with Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena.

@harryba11zack - it’s called escapism. For some of us disappearing from reality even for a couple of hours is a life saver

I agree with her wholeheartedly.

Other than the critics who may look down on superhero flicks, however, I think one of the largest problems for the genre are audiences, as evidenced by what's been happenning with shows like LANTERNS, or what's going on (on a different genre, of course, since it's a videogame adaptation but there's a bit of an overlap in the kind of fandom) with Cregger's RESIDENT EVIL film.

See, there's talk, even amongst fans, of all these film being cookie cutter, mass produced and ultimately generic entertainment more often than not. Yet every time a director or writer or showrunner is trying to truly break the mold and try something a bit daring to take the genre elsewhere (sometimes successfully and sometimes not, admittedly, but the courage to try something new should be applauded nonetheless), they get torn to shreds by the fandom and a large portion of the audience for veering too far from the preestablished mold.HOw can the genre truly evolve in weird, new, different ways if it's not even allowed at least the good will of going "OK; it's a weid thing you're trying here, I'm not necessarily on board but I'll wait till you've told your story to properly judge it by its merits"?

@Franshu - the original teaser of resident evil had me thinking it was going to suck, seeing the full trailer and the one clip has me thinking this movie is going to be awesome.

Eternals was a great movie for lore nerds, lots of backstory and some people couldnt handle that with characters they didnt know about. Also the cgi/design kind of sucked for the deviants - the rest of the cgi was good.

lanterns has been OK, it could be better. People are getting tired of seeing racism in everything, but the show so far is only 3 episodes in - and has been OK. I think more are annoyed that hal looks to be dead after one episode.

Of course I'd like to see them back. The fight scenes are among the best and Makari had the best speedster sequence I've ever seen. Would like to see Icarus back and for them to continue the story. They can't leave it unresolved that the Celestial was last seen threatening judgment.

“Eternals was not high on their priority list,”

Interesting that she’s say this. It definitely didn’t seem that way at the time. I’d interpret her statement more as “Marvel didn’t originally consider Eternals important enough to make until I came along and convinced them otherwise.” Seems like Marvel weren't sure how to move forward with it until Chloe came along with her pitch.

Eternals feels like a movie made by people who genuinely thought they were laying the foundations for something enormous. Something with huge ramifications for the MCU going forward. So I really find it hard to believe that it wasn’t a high priority for Marvel.

@EscapeMySight - Feige probably thought at the time they can potentially create a blockbuster out of an unknown team and if that happens, they'll pop up here and there and be in Avengers films, and if that doesn't happen, we tapped Chloe Zhao for a potential Oscar worthy film that's a one off. Sadly, neither happened.

I think at the time there were many threads that could've gone somewhere, with Celestials and the "Benefactor". I think there were talks of Norman Osborne being introduced in Phase 4 but that lead to nothing.
EscapeMySight
EscapeMySight - 9/5/2026, 9:31 PM
@Loohnutick - Yeah, I think that’s probably what happened. I can totally see Feige thinking “let’s see if we can turn this unknown team into the next Guardians,” while Zhao’s involvement also meant they could get something a bit more ambitious/prestige-y out of it if it didn’t take off.

I think that’s more what I meant. Whatever its initial priority was, by the time they made it, Eternals really felt like they thought it could become something much bigger. The Celestials, Tiamut, Black Knight, Eros, all the unresolved stuff… it’s a LOT of setup for a movie that might potentially have been a one-off.

And yeah, Phase 4 is really interesting in retrospect because there were so many dangling threads that seemed like they were going somewhere, and then just didn’t, lol. The Celestials, Ten Rings, Power Broker, the apparent Norman Osborn stuff, etc. It makes me wonder how different the original Phase 4 roadmap actually was, if there was indeed one at all.

So I think Zhao’s comment is probably technically true. Eternals may not have started out as a priority. But it feels like at some point they became pretty invested in the idea that it could be one. And once it bombed, they basically just abandoned that whole branch of the MCU, which is kind of nuts for something that’s supposed to be as interconnected as the MCU is.
Loohnutick
Loohnutick - 9/6/2026, 4:06 AM
@EscapeMySight - The Problem with Phase 4-5 is there was no glue that drew EVERYONE in an event. The Multiverse Saga was just Dr. Strange, Wanda and Spider-Man. I think it was just a rumor but I remember before Endgame that Phase 4 and up would be split into 2 sagas the Cosmic saga leading up to an Annihilation event and a Dark Avengers Saga on Earth happening at the same time. They made too many threads with no pay offs when they should've focused on the Cosmic cast with Captain Marvel, Thor, Guardians, Nova and on Earth we would've focused on a Siege type event with the Earth heros fighting off the Dark Avengers. They had everything set up with too, with Asgard on Earth, Benefactor, and Thor would come in last minute after the Annihilation stuff to claim Asgard during the Earth's Siege event. It was all right there, I was sure that's where it was headed.

They treated the Eternals like the movie version of the Inhumans...they deserved better and how do you just erase Starfox and Black Knight/ Blade in the end credits...

...do better...

Agreed…

I just find it funny how these acclaimed filmmakers that write off the genre consider others like the western or crime genres as high art as opposed to superhero films but what exactly makes those “superior” huh?.

You can make a bad , average or good film in any genre so inherently none is better or more “high art” then the others but it’s the filmmakers who make stories in those various genres that make it so imo with their movies as certain ones have in the past and may do so in the future aswell.

Anyway good on Chloe Zhao for defending the genre and even though I felt Eternals was just decent , I do hope she gets another shot in the comic book/superhero genre eventually!!.

That movie was a [frick]ing abortion. Total [frick]ing woke bullshit garbage and a giant virtue signal that backfired.

Lots of soy soaked mother[frick]ers and chicks talk shit about 'representation' and none of those bitchy ass whiners actually GO to see superhero movies.

The [frick]ing audience is was and always will be dudes. Man-children, kids and arrested adolescents, now and forever - but they are always in search of this mythical modern audience that does not [frick]ing exist.

That's why you can stack Shuri and Rose Tico inaction figures to the [frick]ing moon.

It’s just escapism. I don’t think a comic book movie has ever helped me process a real life problem.
EscapeMySight
EscapeMySight - 9/5/2026, 9:35 PM
@GenD - Haha, I think that’s fair, but I don’t think escapism and helping you process something are mutually exclusive.

A film doesn’t necessarily have to be about a real-life problem for something in it to resonate with you or give you a way of thinking about one. That’s basically what storytelling has been doing forever. Mythology, fairy tales, horror, sci-fi, fantasy, comic books… they can all deal with pretty human things while being completely removed from everyday reality.

I mean, I’ve definitely watched films that have made me think about grief, mortality, relationships, loneliness, identity, etc. afterwards, even when the actual plot involved aliens, monsters or people in capes punching each other, lol.

But I also agree that sometimes a movie is just a [frick]ing movie and you want to watch something explode for two hours. Both can be true.

I liked The Eternals. Not saying I loved it, but I certainly don't think it deserves the hate it gets. So her first dip into blockbuster filmmaking didn't set the world on fire. Eh, nobody's perfect. But, having learned from her experience on this one, I'd wager her next one would be a lot better. So I'd definitely be interested in seeing her come back for another MCU flick.

@LoudLon - Silver Surfer. Have it be Earth-based for the first movie, like the original comic. Mephisto as the villain. Write it like a tragedy as Norrin Rad goes from being noble, wise and heroic to frustrated, paranoid and dangerous.

I enjoyed The Eternals. The idea that the Celestials had a group of androids act as farmers to prepare planets and their species for Harvest for a newborn celestial is terrifying. Wars and chaos erupt while they sit back and pull strings in the background to ensure the Celestial is born.

My only issue with the Eternals was the casting choices. Otherwise it was a good film. I also would not have made Icarus a villain. They could have accomplished the same thing story wise without compromising a character that is different from what was shown on film.

I think Eternals could’ve been good with less characters. Avengers built up from solo movies so that people could have some idea of who they were when assembled into an ensemble. If Eternals could’ve had like 5 focused characters it may have helped
