After viewing Amazing Spider-man for the 3rd time, I have to put the movie in Top 3 CBM's ever. Why? Because the movie has planted seeds better than any CBM movie yet in my opinion. Avengers had little teaser trailers, but Amazing Spider-man did it better and this is my chance to talk about why. First of all the film has been planned as a trilogy and it's pretty easy to see the Death of Gwen Stacy as a strong influence in the new series. With the subtle hints at Norman Osborne, and the underlying theme of "Secrets always have a cost Peter", recited by the dying Captain Stacy and Aunt May. It seems pretty clear that Peter is heading towards some hardships. Personally as a Spider-man fan, I believe Spider-man is at his best in his darkest hours, and the previous Spider-man in the Sam Raimi series never truly knew what dark times meant. Spider-man in comic book history is defined by death, and the death of Gwen Stacy only reinforces his desperation to hide his identity and keep his loved ones safe. With the promise of Mary-Jane Watson in the sequel and having only a small role, I can't help but hope for a more emotionally rewarding relationship between MJ and Peter. After having his first and only love tragically taken from him by his best friends father, only to find love once again in his darkest hours. But what I find interesting is Sony's interest in a 4th and 5th movie, and their interest in leading their films up to a Sinister Six film. Being the huge Spidey geek I am, I've been thinking of my own ways for this to happen and other cool story lines that could stem from the seeds of the Amazing Spider-man. So I'll list some of the more immediate seeds that I found besides the Death of Gwen Stacy, and the introduction of MJ, Harry and Norman Osborne. In the Ultimate Spider-man comics, Peter's father had been working on a suit to cure cancer with his partner Eddie Brock SR. I had seen this as a seed for a potential Venom/Symbiote pay-off, they could have interchanged Connors father with Eddie Brock SR, and go the classic Marvel route with the symbiote finding Eddie out of a hate for Spider-man more like the original comics. This is my dream for the Amazing Spider-man series, have the first two sequels build up Peter in college, strengthen his relationship with Gwen, have him meet MJ and Harry Osborne, get a job at the Daily Bugle. They should even introduce some B and C-list villians like Shocker in the first few minutes of the film for Peter to take pictures of to sell to the Bugle. Have the emotional build-up to the tragic Gwen Stacy death that shakes Peter even more than the death of his Uncle, have him contemplate if he was the one that killed her by catching her. Then for the 4th movie, introduce that angry/depressed Peter, who ignores his now fatherless friend Harry out of resentment for his father taking his love, hiding from the love in Mary-Jane Watson, and introduce him to the symbiote his father was creating with Dr.Connors. Use this combination to show a truly dark Peter. The villians of the 4th film should be the Sinister Six, Peter harnessing the symbiote to battle the Six, in the battle he should take it too far with one of the members bringing them close to death before realizing the error of his ways, bringing him to go to a church and trying to rid himself of the suit, only for it to leave Peter and bond with the vengeful Eddie Brock. The 5th movie will be Peter rebuilding, establishing love with Mary-Jane, only for his growth to be blocked by his greatest nemesis; Venom.
