Can White House Down Be Cool?

Can White House Down Be Cool?

A while back, I wrote an article titled Can World War Z Be Cool? Now, I discuss another summer movie I am worried about, Roland Emmerich's White House Down.

Oh, Roland. How you make me laugh. The only movie this guy has made that I thoroughly enjoyed was Independence Day. I thought the rest were, should I say, subpar.

Earlier this year, a movie was released called Olympus Has Fallen. It was a fun, interesting, and entertaining action flick about terrorists taking over the White House. This summer, White House Down will be released. Do you want to guess what it is about? I swear, this must be setting a record for quickest remake ever produced. The fact that this is Roland Emmerich also makes me worried. Now, I don't have anything against the guy, except that most of his movies suck. But maybe this flick can change that, but it will take some work.

First off, in order for this to have any resemblance to a movie that's actually good, it needs to be different from Olympus Has Fallen. Both are about White House takeovers, and that is where the resemblance should end. Olympus Has Fallen was a very straight forward, action packed film, and it worked because of that. It was basically Die Hard in the White House. White House Down looks like it could be more about the discovery of America's darkest secrets, at least, that is what the trailer says.

What it looks like to me is this policeman has to protect the President when the White House is taken over, and then, through their journey, they discover America's ugly secrets. That sounds interesting to me. Even though I have major doubts about this movie, I'll probably go see it anyway. I have to give it credit, it has me intrigued.

Another thing. Don't try to have any B.S. character development in this movie like we're supposed to care about the characters. Just give us cool explosions and action scenes, like in Independence Day. Now, I'm not saying this needs to be as pointless as G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, but don't take like an hour developing characters that we really couldn't care less about. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that this should have no plot and be all explosions for two hours. I don't think that at all. But it should learn from Dredd, Olympus Has Fallen, and Evil Dead. They knew what they were, which was pure entertainment. They didn't spend a ton of time on character development, they let you know just enough and then got to the cool stuff. I don't want all movies to be like that, but I can recognize a movie for what it is, and this looks to be aiming for pure popcorn fun.

What do you think about White House Down? Do you think it will be better than Olympus Has Fallen? Sound off below, and let me know!
