BRIEF HISTORY
Ever since the early 90s, Mortal Kombat has been of the top selling video games around the
world. Debuting in 1992, it changed the way fighting games were presented with cutting edge graphics, unique gameplay, and violent content. It was one of the first video games where you can kill your opponent known as Fatalities. Most of them would display blood and blood with characters ripping out opponents hearts or heads off their body with bones on display.
FATALITY!
Despite the uproar from parents and critics, Mortal Kombat became a merchandise driven franchise. By the mid 90s it was a money making machine with items including shirts, posters, comics, action figures. It was also childens Saturday Mourning cartoon that lasted one season.
EARTHREALM DEFENDERS ASSEMBLE!
The most well form of media for the MK franchise was the two live action theatrical movies. When the first film was released in 1995, it was a suprise hit at the box office grossing over 100 million worldwide. It was praised by fans and movie critics for its cast, plot, and well chographed fight scenes.
Unfornuately, the 'video game movies suck' curse along with overexposure struck the beloved franchise. When the sequel Mortal Kombat Annailation was released in 1997, it was met with poor reception and was a box office bomb. Most of the blame was at the studio for rushing production, cutting the budget, and recasting most of the characters except for Liu Kang and Kitana. Along with a low budget short lived TV Show, Mortal Kombat: Konquest, it was the beginning of the end and by the new milenium it was a relic of the 90s.
REALIZING THE END OF THE FRANCHISE IS NEAR
By the mid 2000s a new MK reboot game was released to positive reception and regained interest of the public and fanbase. There have even been talks of a third movie with a new cast playing the iconic MK characters. Here are my suggestions for the cast.
