THE FANTASTIC FOUR: Rahul Kohli Confirms He Lost Reed Richards Role To Pedro Pascal

The Fall of the House of Usher star Rahul Kohli has confirmed he was among the actors who auditioned for the role of Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four reboot. You can find more details after the jump...

After seemingly endless rumours, Marvel Studios finally announced The Fantastic Four cast earlier this year. Each of them had been linked to the reboot at one time or another, so there were no major surprises for those who had been closely following the casting process.

Oppenheimer star David Krumholtz has confirmed he tried and failed to play the MCU's Thing, and now Midnight Mass star Rahul Kohli has revealed that he missed out on being cast as Mister Fantastic.

He was long a fan favourite choice for Reed Richards and, in the video below, admits to being beaten to the part by The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal.

"Yeah, I don't know if I'm allowed to talk about it but I didn't get it, is the important thing," Kohli explains. "But on good days, I see the Constantine [fan casting]. It will flare up once and again. And, I love all of them. On good days, you're like, 'Man, I'm wanted!' People really want to see. You're the guy that people will shout out for anything."

"On bad days, it's a reminder that, 'You're not the guy. You're not there. These are the roles you'll never get.' So, it's sweet and it's perspective. It's how you feel about yourself."

Kohli's breakout role was in The CW's DC Comics adaptation, iZombie. He's since starred in Supergirl and Harley Quinn, meaning he's no stranger to comic book fare. However, many of you will know the actor best for his collaborations with Mike Flanagan in Netflix TV shows like The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Fall of the House of Usher.

We're sure he'd have made a good Mister Fantastic, but with Pascal quickly establishing himself as a huge star and box office draw, it's easy enough to see why Marvel Studios went with The Last of Us lead.

Check out Kohli's comments in full below.

Marvel Studios has announced that Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing) will lead The Fantastic Four cast. Julia Garner has also joined the reboot as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer.

Recent additions to the cast include Paul Walter Hauser and John Malkovich in mystery roles, along with Ralph Ineson as the villainous Galactus.

Director Matt Shakman worked with both Avatar: The Way of Water co-writer Josh Friedman and WandaVision's Cam Squires on The Fantastic Four's screenplay, with Eric Pearson (Black Widow) recently coming on board for a final polish.

The movie is set to be released in theaters on July 25, 2025.

Idk his body of work. I’m sure he’s a good actor. He looks nothing like a Mr. Richards. Only way he could be one is if he was adopted.

@Mrtoke - neither does Pedro paskel but he’s playing him

@Mrtoke - he was great on Midnight Mass and iZombie, certainly part of the Flanagan-ensemble now.

I find it pretty easy to imagine Reed with a different racial background, his backstory isn't neccessarily tied to any type of stereotype. But to each their own. As a white guy there are only a few characters I'd have a harder time seeing in a race-bent part (like the more billionaire type characters with generational wealth, can't neccessarily see Oliver Queen as anything but a slimy, blonde Draco-face swap before his island years).

@Blergh - I couldn’t give two shits about a race change for Mr. Fantastic. It’s the Richards last name on an Indian. That’s like a Mexican with the last name Wong or Smirnov.

Nothing about Blade said he has to be black but there ain’t a lot out there so he’ll stay black. Bruce Wayne needs to be white cause of white privilege. But yeah I wouldn’t mind if he was another superhero that was previously white in other iterations. It’s just weird to me him having a white last name

@dragon316 - I’m against him as Reed as well but he can kind of pass as white white

@Mrtoke - If your grandfather on your dad side was Richards and all three of your other grandparents are Indians, you'll probably look Indian, while your last name is Richards.

@LeDiableBlanc - I guess? Show me five Indians with the last name Richards

@Mrtoke - That's nothing. Indians may have non indian sounding names. It happens.

Batman being white has never been a thing that impacted his character, so that doesn't matter for that reason either.

@Mrtoke - Bruh, you know names aren't associated with race, right? It usually depends on the religion. Plenty of Christian brown people around.

He’s Indian, born in England. Mom was raised in Taiwan and Dad’s early years were spent in Kenya. Family is all over the world lmao

@Mrtoke - damn, dude's family really made it around the world lol. If he ever has kids they're probably raised in the US, so there's one more branch there.
Kind of a neat cultural library, lots of lore to get into.

Dodged a bullet there

Anyways, for mePedro wasnt a really good fit either, i would like a more classic look of Reed, i mean, im from Chile, i love watching Pedro's work, but i cant see him yet as Mister Fantastic, would prefer a more caucassian look.... but well, maybe time will shut me up

Looks nothing like Reed Richards, so good, Pedro Pascal I feel exactly the same way, looks nothing like Reed Richards and is probably the worse of the Fantastic Four cast.
Blergh
Blergh - 5/25/2024, 6:04 PM
@marvel72 - hard to follow Gruffud IMO. Dude nailed the energy of the character and would have also been a great choice for a more serious Reed. Dude nails more sinister characters as well as the hopeful ones.

His roles in Forever and Liar contrast that perfectly

@Blergh - ...why does that translate for going for non white guys?
Blergh
Blergh - 5/25/2024, 6:11 PM
@Origame - I was more talking about the OP not being happy about Pascal, didn't really lean into the racial aspect. Dunno, I could see Reed with an indian background.
