Over at LA Times, there is an in-depth interview with Andy Serkis, where he talked about playing 'Caesar' in the critically acclaimed film Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Serkis also shared his thoughts on returning to play 'Gollum' in the upcoming film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, directed by Peter Jackson.

"Gollum’s never really gone too far away from me because he’s indelibly kind of printed into my DNA now, I think. I’ll tell you what was weird is going back and playing a character that has been so sort of absorbed into public consciousness that you almost don’t feel like you own it anymore. And to sort of gather it back — I mean, I did feel, I think, probably in the first couple of days going back into it that I was sort of doing a weird impersonation of him rather than being him because there have been so many spoofs and people’s impersonations and so on, and some people’s impersonations are really great. And I’m kind of thinking, “Oh gosh, that’s how to do it, yeah.” And you know, then you get back into it. … Meaningfully getting back into it was really exciting."

Serkis is also a second unit director on The Hobbit films, and this is what he had to say about working with Peter Jackson:

"Peter’s just been the most phenomenal mentor, supporter, friend, collaborator. I cherish working with him so much, and this incredible journey that he’s sort of set me off on, really. Because I’m working on “The Hobbit” not only as Gollum, but I’m directing the second unit. I actually went down there for two weeks to reprise the role of Gollum, and I basically stayed for a year to direct the second unit. So that’s thrilling. I love working with Pete, and everything that he’s created at WETA. The whole team, the whole outfit in New Zealand in Wellington, is a very, very special, wonderful place that I keep willingly returning to."

As I crushed I was that Smaug wasn't present in the trailer, I got excited seeing a Gollum again. The trailer really brought me back to middle earth man; god I love the movies and the books. Might reread/rewatch just for the sake of doing so.

@Dev7 He directed parts of the original LOTR trilogy uncredited as well. This time Jackson's giving him official credit for it.

Maybe he's possessed by those actor demon's that got Heath Ledger! Watch out Andy!

Have any of you read the book? Smaug does not appear until the end of the book so why would he show up in the first part of the movie?

Also, they haven't even finished filming so obviously he couldn't appear in any trailer yet

@GrayFox1025 & golden123 - People are just anxious to see Smaug. Jackson took some liberties with TLOTR, so maybe in 'The Hobbit' part 1 too?

SUPERMAN2013 - "he didnt have the dots on his face or anything like that in the LOTR..."

Yes he did. He had the full-works. Thats why Gollum's facial expressions are exactly the same as Andy's.

Gollum wouldn't have been so ingrained in mainstream media if Serkis hadn't had done such an amazing job bringing the character to life. Looking forward to seeing how Gollum looks in the Hobbit especially with new CGI treatment he is gonna get.
