BOX OFFICE: PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Opens With Better Than Expected $5 Million
The Thor Freudenthal helmed Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters (which stars Logan Lerman, Stanley Tucci and Nathan Fillion) has kicked off its run at the North American box office with over $5 million, putting it on track for a better than expected five-day total. Read on for details!
Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters initially looked set to be yet another big budget box office disappointment, but now looks set to overperform this weekend with a five day total of between $28 - 30 million. The movie opened on Tuesday evening with $835,000 and earned around $5 million yesterday. Costing $90 million to produce, the sequel to 2010's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief will need to perform well overseas. That first instalment made $88.8 million in North America and $138 million internationally. It's unclear whether or not this movie will come anywhere close to that. Sea Of Monsters' success now rests on its marketing campaign and word of mouth (no CinemaScore is available as of yet). Either way, it will face some stiff competition when Disney's Planes and Neil Blomkamp's Elysium both open on Friday.
