BOX OFFICE: PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Opens With Better Than Expected $5 Million

The Thor Freudenthal helmed Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters (which stars Logan Lerman, Stanley Tucci and Nathan Fillion) has kicked off its run at the North American box office with over $5 million, putting it on track for a better than expected five-day total. Read on for details!

Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters initially looked set to be yet another big budget box office disappointment, but now looks set to overperform this weekend with a five day total of between $28 - 30 million. The movie opened on Tuesday evening with $835,000 and earned around $5 million yesterday. Costing $90 million to produce, the sequel to 2010's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief will need to perform well overseas. That first instalment made $88.8 million in North America and $138 million internationally. It's unclear whether or not this movie will come anywhere close to that. Sea Of Monsters' success now rests on its marketing campaign and word of mouth (no CinemaScore is available as of yet). Either way, it will face some stiff competition when Disney's Planes and Neil Blomkamp's Elysium both open on Friday.

If this sorry ass excuse of a movie can make money then there's definitely room for a Wonder Woman movie.

Something cheap with the digital fx in this one, at least in the trailer. Lighting looks of sometimes. But i agree, why make this movie when Deadpool can be made as well.
This gives me Jack the Giant Slayer feel, that ain't a good feel.

Both movies look like trash to me.....Matt Damon looks like the $6.00 man with all that hardware and Percy Jackson reminds me of the whole Harry Potter franchise crap.

@beto, If IM3 by many can be considered trash after grossing well over a billion dollars.... then yes Harry Potter and Percy Jackson can still be considered garbage and also yes trash.

I didn't even know this was in theaters. I saw the trailer here, otherwise, that's it. No TV spots. No ads on the MTA buses. No billboards. Nada.

Damn, RT is slaughtering every "big" release this week except Elysium (and even that is just barely in the 70 percantile).

For right now, it looks like #1 is either going to Percy or Elysium. I wouldn't be surprised if We're the Millers overperform and bypass them both but Planes is likely going to get crushed under all three. Man, this summer has had some ridiculously crowded weeks.
