Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is set for release at the end of the month, and Paramount Pictures has now debuted an action-packed - and pretty funny - final trailer for its new adaptation of the best-selling tabletop fantasy adventure game.

Once again using Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" to great effect, this latest look at the movie spotlights plenty of new footage, as our five heroes do battle against all manner of weird and wonderful creatures while attempting to avoid being captured by an evil wizard.

Check out the trailer below, and click on the Twitter thread to see the rest of the new character posters.

"A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people," reads the official synopsis. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure."

Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley helmed the project, and wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio. Derek Kolstad (John Wick; The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) has also been hired to write and develop a separate live-action Dungeons & Dragons television show, which was recently given a straight-to-series order for Paramount+.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves arrives in theaters March 31, 2023.

This movie has to have been made as a middle finger to some producer in Hollywood.

I just don't get why we can't get a good DnD film.

Honestly, if they want to make a DnD film with comedy, they should just steal the Jumanji gimmick, and have a regular group if kids get suckered into one of their DnD campaigns and has to use their vast knowledge of their characters and DnD lore to win the campaign and get home. At least it would make sense why they are making jokes.

@TheVandalore - Exactly this! The DnD novels are not comedies. Could you imagine a serious DND or Forgotten Realms movie in the same kind of vein as Lord of the Rings?

It would be unbelievable.

These Guys Get it!!!

Let's get in that writing room for the NEXT round and do some fixin'!!!

I do feel the comedic-adventure approach this film 📽️ has taken, will be a way in for 'DnD' to connect with a theatre audience, BUT for future instalments the IP should consider the "Jumanji" approach, for MANY reasons

Separating the players from the campaign

Not necessarily "Jumanji" as a carbon copy, but maybe like

"Cloak & Dagger"

@TheVandalore -

Another approach would be to have the players in a different reality governing the fates of the characters through a D & D Game Master, where they joke around, while the characters are living through horrendous life and death ☠️ scenarios; completely immersed in the reality of the campaign

There can be a META dimension, like "Tron", but in-game, injuries are life and death 💀

Like this short 📽️ Film, in some ways:

A scene like this could capture the relationship a D & D player, has to a character he has campaigned several times with, that doesn't make it

I'm using "The Gunfighter" Short Film 📽️ as a reference

Maybe a blend between film approaches to capture the grimness of somberness of 'in-game' vs. roleplay, where the GameMaster Omnipresence is alluded to

Something that approaches the tabletop aspect

@Scripturepoetic -

"The Gunslinger" captured the reactions players have, as the campaign unfolds for them; while 'in-game', the characters are living through the session, in the only sense of reality they know

@TheVandalore @CorndogBurglar - I don't mind the comedy. If anything, I even think it's part of DnD. Can't imagine a DnD session without the random stuff and jokes

Weren’t the writers of this recently bragging how they purposely emasculated the male characters and made them stupid, weak and clumsy? Yeah no thanks.

@bkmeijer1 -

You're not the only one

People will watch it

As I was thinking 🤔 about their approach

It actually makes sense, especially as a jumping on point

If this movie can get a decent foothold 👣 with viewership, that might be a positive into going into darker, more serious times, that are adaptations of well known stories
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/8/2023, 5:18 AM
@Scripturepoetic - if this does well, I can see spin-offs happening in different genres as well. But comedy is a quick way to build an audience easily
Scripturepoetic
Scripturepoetic - 3/8/2023, 5:25 AM
@bkmeijer1 -

Exactly

With audience support they can start re-introducing staple 'Dragonlance' characters like Raistlin Majere
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/8/2023, 5:39 AM
@Scripturepoetic - think Dragonlance is even capable of supporting a whole franchise of itself.

I kinda wanna see some more recent adventures though. Tyranny of Dragons, Storm King's Thunder and Curse of Strahd just to name a few big ones.

But also Lost Mine of Phandelver and Icespire Peak I got with the Essentials Kit are fun adventures that I think can be adapted well.
