DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES Star Chris Pine Believes A Sequel Will Happen

Despite a disappointing run at the box office, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves star Chris Pine says he's "pretty confident" that a sequel will happen...

It sounds like Paramount Pictures might be planning to roll the dice on a sequel to Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves after all.

Paramount and eOne's recent fantasy adaptation received very positive reviews from critics (it's sitting at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an equally impressive 93% audience score), but despite a decent opening weekend and an A- CinemaScore, the movie simply failed to find its feet at the box office.

Honor Among Thieves finished its theatrical run with a disappointing $93M domestic/$207M worldwide on a $150M budget. Factoring in advertising costs, etc, the chances of a sequel being greenlit seemed to be somewhere between slim and none.

However, all may not be lost for our mismatched band of heroic adventurers.

According to star Chris Pine, a sequel has been discussed, and he feels there's a strong possibility that a second movie will happen.

"I've heard some rumors about it," the Star Trek actor tells Games Radar. "But I don't know anything yet. But I feel pretty confident that it may happen." When asked if he'd be happy to return as Edgin, Pine responded: "Absolutely."

It would be a real shame if we didn't get to see these characters again, but a Paramount+ D&D spin-off series from Derek Kolstad (John Wick; The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) is still in development (as far as we know), so even if this sequel doesn't materialize, there's a possibility that something can be salvaged and the franchise will forge ahead.

"A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people," reads the official synopsis. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure."

Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley helmed the project, and wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio. Along with Pine, the movie stars Hugh Grant, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Regé-Jean Page, and Daisy Head.

The main characters from the Dungeons & Dragons animated series also make live-action cameos during the High Sun Games, with Edgar Abram as Hank, Seamus O'Hara as Presto, Emer McDaid as Sheila, Trevor Kaneswaran as Eric, Moe Sasegbon as Diana, and Luke Bennett as Bobby.

If we’re talking sequels to blockbusters with Chris Pine, I would rather see Star Trek 4, but that has been in development hell for years.

@RolandD - same man

One proper goodbye would be nice but if not then I thought Beyond ended in a good place.

@TheVisionary25 - Agree. I want one more but the Beyond ending works well as both a close to this version and setting up new stories.

I hope it happens since I liked the film and the cast of characters aswell but it does seem slim to none since it didn’t do well at the B.O…

In that case , i wouldn’t mind a show set in this D&D universe with a new crew aswell.

@TheVisionary25 - My understanding is that the streaming numbers were really great and might have actually brought in profit

@Evansly - if that’s true then that’s great

Honestly , if they could budget it smartly then a streaming sequel could work imo.

Really fun movie. I've recently gotten into DnD, and although it isn't necessary at all to understand the movie it does make spotting Easter eggs easier. I would love for a sequel

I have been watching movies in theatres for 42 years and have been playing D&D for 35 years and the movie was very good, by far the best of the 4 D&D films.

That being said, it was too expensive at $150 million and should have cost a maximum of $90 million, probably less.

It also came shortly after a time were most fans of D&D were very pissed at the license holder Wizards of the coast, because they tried to cancel the Open Gaming License which allowed 3rd parties to provide content for the system.

Last but not least D&D hasn't as many fans
as Marvel or DC and worldwide brand awareness is much lower outside of america.

A 2nd movie with the same cast would only work with half the budget and i see Chris Pratt and Hugh Grant as a problem in that.

I loved this movie. Felt like a bunch of people sitting around playing an actual D&D module, which was a huge highlight for me. The serious aspect of the game is fantastic, but the quirkiness and unpredictability of the people you play it with and how they've made their characters is the best part.

Didn't get around to watching it on the big screen, but if a sequel happens I definitely will. Honor Among Thieves was one of the better and enjoyable movies of the year
