It sounds like Paramount Pictures might be planning to roll the dice on a sequel to Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves after all.
Paramount and eOne's recent fantasy adaptation received very positive reviews from critics (it's sitting at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an equally impressive 93% audience score), but despite a decent opening weekend and an A- CinemaScore, the movie simply failed to find its feet at the box office.
Honor Among Thieves finished its theatrical run with a disappointing $93M domestic/$207M worldwide on a $150M budget. Factoring in advertising costs, etc, the chances of a sequel being greenlit seemed to be somewhere between slim and none.
However, all may not be lost for our mismatched band of heroic adventurers.
According to star Chris Pine, a sequel has been discussed, and he feels there's a strong possibility that a second movie will happen.
"I've heard some rumors about it," the Star Trek actor tells Games Radar. "But I don't know anything yet. But I feel pretty confident that it may happen." When asked if he'd be happy to return as Edgin, Pine responded: "Absolutely."
It would be a real shame if we didn't get to see these characters again, but a Paramount+ D&D spin-off series from Derek Kolstad (John Wick; The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) is still in development (as far as we know), so even if this sequel doesn't materialize, there's a possibility that something can be salvaged and the franchise will forge ahead.
"A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people," reads the official synopsis. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure."
Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley helmed the project, and wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio. Along with Pine, the movie stars Hugh Grant, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Regé-Jean Page, and Daisy Head.
The main characters from the Dungeons & Dragons animated series also make live-action cameos during the High Sun Games, with Edgar Abram as Hank, Seamus O'Hara as Presto, Emer McDaid as Sheila, Trevor Kaneswaran as Eric, Moe Sasegbon as Diana, and Luke Bennett as Bobby.
